Mi è piaciuto We stayed at Kingsmead Centre for a week with our six-year-old using it as a base for exploring Devon and absolutely loved it. We were on the Bracken pitch and this is easily one of the best campsites we’ve stayed at in the UK, especially if you enjoy proper woodland camping. The pitches are a very good size and nicely spaced out so you get a fantastic sense of privacy and never feel crowded. You can leave your car on the access track close to your tent, which is very convenient. Our pitch was also close to the woodland fishing lake. There are two fishing lakes on site and even if you’re not into fishing they’re lovely places to walk around. The facilities were excellent. There are two warm toilet and shower blocks: one has three individual rooms with a shower, toilet and sink in each, while the other has two separate showers and two separate toilets. Between them there’s a warm washing-up area with a fridge and freezer for guests to use. Everything was spotlessly clean throughout our stay. The water was properly hot and the showers had good pressure, and we never had to queue for a shower, toilet or washing-up sink. The facilities are also very well thought out for families and people with reduced mobility. There are baby-changing tables, a baby bath and a step stool for children. Four of the five showers are suitable for wheelchair users, and there is also a shower chair available. One thing we particularly liked is the campsite’s no-music rule. Guests aren’t allowed to play their own music, which in our opinion is brilliant because in a woodland campsite it’s much nicer to hear the birds and the leaves in the trees. The evenings and nights were wonderfully peaceful and quiet. Normally raised fire pits and raised barbecues are allowed, although we stayed during an open-fire ban. We checked with the owners and were able to use our gas barbecue instead. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and there’s a nice shop at reception with the essentials. There’s also a public footpath running through the campsite, so you occasionally see walkers passing through, including in the evening. We even saw a couple of horse riders once, but none of this disturbed us at all. On the field near the shower blocks there’s a table tennis table and a few simple outdoor games for children, such as ring toss. I also regularly met the owners’ cat on the footpath near our pitch, he’s absolutely lovely, very friendly and loves a bit of attention. We paid for the Wi-Fi. It was quite patchy for us — we’d have a good connection for a while, then lose it completely, and this would repeat throughout the day. The only minor downside for us was the location. I wouldn’t say it’s the most convenient campsite if you’re planning lots of day trips around Devon, but all the other positives easily outweighed that. We had such a lovely week here and would happily stay again next time we’re visiting this part of the country.
