Make tracks here if you're craving a trip to Kruger National Park – South Africa's largest game reserve is an easy 15-minute drive from this well-connected Mpumalanga spot.
Numbi Caravan Park in Hazyview is smart, spacious and safe courtesy of 24-hour site security. It's also abuzz with local wildlife – the park's landscaped subtropical gardens are home to oodles of indigenous trees and upwards of 100 different species of bird. A stroll through this lush foliage should keep you cool on a hot summer day, but if you need extra help there are also shaded stands to chill out on and an outdoor pool for refreshing dips.
At dinner time, the restaurant's big wooden doors are thrown open and you can dine indoors or (when the weather is fine) at the poolside. Swing by here for the breakfast buffet in the morning or head down in the evening for scrumptious braai dinners.
In terms of ablutions, this site has a shipshape set of toilets and showers (including disabled cubicles and a bath for young tots) that are cleaned on a regular basis. Numbi Caravan Park also has handy facilities like wifi, a communal kitchen and a play area. The shops and restaurants of central Hazyview can be reached by driving down the R40 for a couple of minutes.

Kruger National Park's Phabeni entrance is 15 minutes' drive away – stop off at one of the travel companies in Hazyview if you're after a tour from an expert local guide. Walking safaris, boat trips and hot air balloon flights are just some of the activities that can be sorted here. Want a foretaste of the animals you might encounter in the park? Head to Perry's Bridge Reptile Park (five minutes) or to Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary (10 minutes).
Other natural hotspots within reach include Blyde River Canyon (45 minutes), reckoned to be the biggest foliage-covered canyon in the world. For a top panorama of the canyon and its surrounding lowveld, head to the part of the park known as God's Window (45 minutes).
Mpumalanga is great golfing country – about half a dozen top courses are within an hour's driving distance. The nearest, Kruger Park Lodge (five minutes) has views over the Sabie river and nine well-designed holes to take on. Golf too slow-paced for the kids in your group? Induna Adventures (15 minutes) has a fab zipline, quad-biking course and riding stables.
