A marina and a beach… surely a splendid combo for folk who fancy a bit of activity and a bit of downtime on their hols (or whose travelling parties have to take into account differing tastes). And such is the offering at well-equipped Vakantiepark Marina Beach, on the outskirts of the Zeeland town of Hoek.
Both the aforementioned aspects are provided here thanks to a setting on Braakmankreek lake, on the Westerschelde estuary. Hook boats up at the marina to set sail for birdwatching in nearby nature areas or hunt out fishing spots; windsurfing and waterskiing are on hand too if you’d like to try your hand at different water-based antics.
More interested in the less-active side of things? Suss out a suitable sandy or grassy area by the lake to settle with a book while the nippers zoom down slides into the water or get stuck into games of basketball, beach volleyball, miniature golf, pétanque or table tennis. If it’s not such a fine day, steer them instead to the big indoor play centre that’s packed with kiddie favourites like a ball pool, climbing frame, slide and trampoline, or take advantage of a handy deal that gives guests free access to an indoor waterpark 15 minutes' drive away.
Whichever option(s) you picked from the above, eats aren’t far away: the site’s restaurant, pizzeria and snack bar take care of hungry times (with takeaways available too) and there’s a bar for those who simply seek a cool drink or two. And if the kids have been particularly well behaved (fingers crossed…) perhaps you’ll treat them to something sweet from the ice cream parlour?

Plan days out on the indoor ski slopes at SnowWorld Terneuzen (10 minutes’ drive), take off to the rides, play areas and miniature town at Mini Mundi (half an hour) or get set for encounters with all sorts of sea dwellers at Het Arsenaal (35 minutes), a pirate-themed amusement park with aquarium attached.
Calm things down a bit with some time out among the wetlands of Verdronken land van Saeftinghe (35 minutes) or hop over the border to Belgium to see what birds you can spot at Zwin Nature Park (45 minutes). Bigger birds are on display at Valkeniershof (15 minutes), home to some rather grand birds of prey and owls, and there are ground-dwelling beasties at Iguana Reptile Zoo (35 minutes).
For urban outings it’s recommended you plan at trips to both Ghent (40 minutes) and Bruges (50 minutes), where you can take canal boat trips and visit the chocolate museum.
