Your first outing may well be into the Veluwe forest and heath areas a few minutes' walk from the site – the trails here are easily explored on foot or by bike, and dogs are welcome too. Once you've wandered at ground level, you can see it all from above at the treetop trails of Klimbos Garderen (15 minutes’ drive) – there are several options here for ages four and above. If it's animal encounters you're after, you may like to plan trips to see marine mammals at the Dolfinarium (15 minutes), meet cheeky monkeys at Apenheul (35 minutes) or view animals from all around the globe in recreations of their natural habitats at Burgers' Zoo (40 minutes). For a bit of town time, you could potter around the shops, galleries and family attractions of Putten (10 minutes), visit the Hanseatic town of Harderwijk (15 minutes) or stroll around Spakenburg (25 minutes) to see its well-preserved fishing harbour and its traditional costume and fishing museum. A little further away, the lively city of Utrecht (half an hour) has canals, museums and classic Dutch architecture to explore, as well as the chance to climb the tallest church tower in the Netherlands (the Dom Tower, at 112 metres).
