You can access hiking and biking trails in Eifel National Park straight from your pitch. Other outdoor activities include swimming, dinghy sailing and watersports on the Eifel Rursee Reservoir (half an hour’s drive), where you can also take boat cruises around its forested shoreline. If you’re after a bit of local culture, explore Mariawald Abbey (15 minutes), a peaceful abbey with a small shop selling beer brewed by the monks. Little remains of the impressive 12th-century Schleiden Castle itself (also 15 minutes), but its Church of St Philip and St James is a fine example of late-Gothic architecture and has a renowned baroque-era organ in its striking, red-brick interior. For a sharp reminder of mid-20th-century history, you can also visit Ordensburg Vogelsang (half an hour), a sprawling former Nazi training camp; for an understanding of its purpose, join guided tours of the vast complex, its brutalist sculptures and the rudimentary barracks where the cadets slept.
