Tempted by the idea of staying next to a marina, with direct access to a riverside cycling trail towards historic Lower Saxony towns? Get your bags packed and loaded, as Marina Mehlbergen is set directly on a marina on the river Weser in Lower Saxony and has access to the stunning Weser cycle path between Nienburg and Hoya. Those two historic towns are otherwise just a 20-minute drive away for those who aren’t keen for too much pedalling. Start the day with alfresco breakfast on the picnic bench, which happily has a view of the boats. There are a few options for the morning’s activities, from going fishing on the river (if you have the correct fishing licence and grab a guest fishing permit from the site) or renting a boat for a fee (this one doesn’t require a licence). After you've spent the day pedalling, boating or angling, stroll to the jetty on the site’s swimming lake to cool off. If you're hungry, make use of the site's vending machine, which is stocked with tasty snacks and drinks. You could also browse the licensed shop for more snacks and drinks (including those of the alcoholic kind), plus items like bread, jam, dairy products and camping and boating equipment. Other facilities include a washing-up room and amenities block with toilets and showers. Dogs are also welcome to accompany you on a holiday here.

Mi è piaciuto Great for a one night stop ovr whilst travelling across northern Europe into Denmark and beyond by ferry.
Quiet and pleasant marina surroundings. Tranquil haven.

Non mi è piaciuto Functional washroom facilities, but tired and unloved - could do with an overhaul. It really wouldn't cost too much!

Mi è piaciuto Super Stellplatz, toller Blick zur Marina, da 1. Reihe und sogar Blick auf vorbeifahrende Frachter von der Weser. Sehr ruhig, wir waren Sonntag da. Toilette und Dusche sehr sauber und immer wenig fregmentiert. Hatte eher etwas familiäres im Vergleich zum Massentourismus auf großen Campingplätzen. Wir kommen wieder, danke liebe Hafenmeisterin für Ihr Arrangement.

Mi è piaciuto We stayed overnight on our way to Denmark. Lovely, tranquil site with a small number of pitches overlooking the marina. Basic but clean & tidy facilities. Electric hook-up available. Fuel station & Aldi supermarket nearby. A great stop off point.

Mi è piaciuto Set in a beautiful countryside location, this campsite enjoys a wonderful position beside the marina, making it a peaceful place to unwind. Waking to the early morning mist drifting across the water and spending the evenings watching swallows swoop overhead with a chilled drink in hand created some truly memorable moments.

Nature is all around you, and while the sounds of geese and frogs can be quite lively at night, we found them all part of the charm of staying in such a natural setting.

The campsite itself offers excellent value for money, and the setting is undoubtedly its greatest asset. One thing to be aware of is that the owner speaks very little English, so communication may be difficult if you need assistance. Despite this, if you’re looking for an affordable campsite in a beautiful waterside location, this is still well worth considering.

Non mi è piaciuto Unfortunately, our peaceful stay was disrupted on one night when a party at the marina continued until around 3 a.m. The loud music and celebrations carried across the campsite, and no action was taken to reduce the noise, which was disappointing and inconsiderate for those hoping for a restful night’s sleep.

Mi è piaciuto Toller Stellplatz direkt an der Marina. Sehr nette Begrüßung durch die Hafenmeisterin. Sie Sanitären Anlagen sind ein bisschen in die Jahre gekommen, aber alles war super sauber. Toller Platz zum ausspannen. Wir kommen bestimmt noch mal her.

Drive or cycle to Nienburg (20 minutes’ drive) to see its stunning half-timbered buildings. Set on the river Weser, the town is also surrounded by marshland, forests and heather areas, so if you want to continue cycling, driving or hiking further afield, you very much have the means to do so on the local trails. Occasional events may be held in Nienburg, such as the Old Town Festival and asparagus festival. Hoya (20 minutes) is also on the Weser cycling trail and is full of gorgeous scenery and historic old buildings. Quench your first at one of the riverfront restaurants, perhaps, or ask around about the local legends (dwarfs, and so on…). If a non-negotiable for any holiday is a day by the water, take the time to drive south towards Steinhuder Meer (50 minutes). Here, there are plenty of chances to take a dip, whether at one of the lakefront beaches or by taking a sailing, paddleboarding or kitesurfing class. Steinhuder Meer is the largest lake in Lower Saxony, just so you know for bucket-list purposes.
