Accessed straight from the campsite, the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park is the stunning springboard to walking and cycling in tree-clad valleys, climbing craggy peaks and kayaking down gorges on the Ardèche and Chassezac rivers. The Ardèche region is also noted for its stunning subterranean world, where you can check out replica Palaeolithic cave paintings in Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche (45 minutes), which are exact copies of originals in the UNESCO-listed Chauvet Cave. Alternatively, tour the underground limestone stalagmite and stalactite formations and light shows at Grotte de la Madeleine (50 minutes) or Grotte Saint-Marcel (about an hour). Take the kids to meet the donkeys, pigs and llamas at Parc Animalier de Lussas (20 minutes), where they can also ride and feed the ponies. And when you’re exhausted after all that sightseeing, it’s time to sneak off for some restorative ‘me’ time at the thermal springs and spas of Vals-les-Bains (10 minutes).
