Hiking, fishing and watersports could be on the agenda when you stay at Camping du Relais du Lac en Aveyron – as could peaceful hours of doing very little. This rural Aveyron site is on the banks of Lake Saint-Gervais in the Aubrac Regional Natural Park, so it’s in a splendid position for either active or chilled-out days surrounded by natural landscapes. Staying by a lake means lovely views, of course – and in this case it also means easy access to the water for paddleboarding, pedalo outings, fishing and swimming (the lake beach is supervised in summer to keep everyone safe). It’s a lovely location indeed, but owners Frédéric and Tatiana aren’t relying on that to keep their guests happy – they’ve made sure there are plenty of facilities provided too. Those include a play area, a games room, a pétanque court and a tennis court for some on-site entertainment, and a restaurant, a bread service, a barbecue area and a licensed shop to keep everyone fed. Everyday essentials are sorted too – guests have access to a launderette, a washing-up area, a wifi service and bathrooms with toilets, showers, disabled access and baby changing facilities. Dogs are welcome, and can stretch their paws at the dog exercise area. Days out nearby might take you to Laguiole in search of its famed cheese and knives, to visit châteaux or to follow some of the hiking trails that start at the site and take you out to explore some of the best of the local landscapes.

Getting out for a walk is a lovely way to explore your surroundings – you could set off on one of the local trails or set your sights on a focal point like the Saut du Chien waterfall (10 minutes’ drive) or the Barrage de la Bromme (half an hour). Along the way could stop for a tour of the Montézic hydroelectric power station (15 minutes) to see how the area’s geology provides its power. If you’d like a little more adventure in your outdoor escapades, there are treetop trails and an aqua park at Aloa Nature (20 minutes), and you can organise canyoning and climbing trips here too. If you’re confident enough to go out on your own, head to the climbing trails at Via Ferrata du Bois des Baltuergues (20 minutes). Feet back firmly on the ground, you may like to take a wander around Laguiole (20 minutes), renowned for its traditional knife makers, and take a château tour – options nearby include Château de Valon (20 minutes), Château du Bousquet (25 minutes) and Château d’Estaing (half an hour).

Mi è piaciuto Beautiful campsite that we found unexpectedly. Lush peaceful surroundings with a gorgeous lake for swimming. Lovely helpful staff and nice bar/restaurant. Would highly recommend. Wished we could have stayed longer and will definitely be back
