To learn about Brittany’s ancient and mysterious past, make a beeline for the vast megalithic site at the Alignements de Carnac (20 minutes’ drive), where there are more than 3,000 standing stones to wander around. You can see several smaller prehistoric relics nearby, including the Dolmen de Kergavat, the Alignements du Petit-Ménec and the menhirs at Kerderff (all 20 minutes). Kids may well demand a day on the sandy crescent of beach at Erdeven (10 minutes), or like the sound of the obstacle course and tree-top ropes at Expéria Park Lorient (40 minutes). They can also have a go at zorbing and zipwiring through the trees at Forêt Adrénaline Carnac - Parc Accrobranche (15 minutes). For family hikes, grab a pair of walking boots to explore the spectacular Quiberon Peninsula (35 minutes) on foot, following the Grande Randonnée GR 34 hiking trail around the coastline. If you fancy getting out on the Atlantic waves, hire dinghies, sea kayaks and kitesurfing boards from Port-Haliguen Marina (also 35 minutes), or try sand yachting along Plage du Fort de Penthièvre (25 minutes).
