If it’s a family-friendly place you’re after, a site with ‘family’ in its name is surely a good place to start. And indeed, there’s plenty going on at the well-equipped Familiepark Goolderheide to keep the whole group entertained. A few minutes’ drive from the centre of Bocholt, in Limburg, the action here starts with a trio of pools. Two of them are geared up for the nippers with energetic additions like waterslides and a climbing wall with waterfall to navigate. There’s also a green lawn, which comes in handy when it’s time to relax on dry land. If you prefer your dips with sandy surrounds, plonk yourself down at the lake beach instead for splashes and sandcastles. More active times can be had out of the water; the extensive list of activities includes volleyball, badminton, pétanque, football, miniature golf, tennis, table tennis and skating. No need to break for foodie foraging, either: an on-site restaurant provides the fuel for all that activity, and fresh sandwiches are available in the shop, along with other groceries and handy things like postcards so you can let folk back home know what you’ve been up to. If you need to get in touch sooner, there’s also free wifi. Elsewhere on site, there’s a launderette and four amenity blocks with toilets, showers and sinks, as well as washing-up areas and places for rinsing vegetables (ready to go on the barbecue or accompany your grilled grub).

When it’s time to stretch your legs away from the site, there are several walking and cycling paths in Bocholt and the surrounding areas. For extra scenic strolls, make tracks for the Hoge Kempen National Park (half an hour’s drive) – there are heaps of hiking and cycling paths here, as well as plenty of track dedicated to horse riding. The Sahara Lommel nature reserve (half an hour) is also a fine choice for ambles among woodland and along a pretty lake. If the kids are up for meeting some critters, pay a visit to Alpaca Farm (five minutes) or FarmFun (10 minutes), which combines a farm with an activity park for teambuilding games and things like bumper ball and golf to get stuck into. Can't get enough of the critters? Aim for Beekse Bergen Zoo (an hour). If the pool scene at base has left you wanting more, there are indoor and outdoor fun pools at Lago Pelt Dommelslag (15 minutes), as well as saunas, a steam bath and whirlpool. As Familiepark Goolderheide is near the Netherlands border, you could also switch countries for the day with a visit to Eindhoven (45 minutes) for some city sights.
