If a low-key getaway is the order of the day on your next trip to south-west Wales, have yourself a simple stay at the small but well formed Penhill Farm Caravan Park on the western edges of the spectacular Brecon Beacons National Park. With lush green scenery to gaze upon from the grassy tree-lined grounds, the site’s a grand place for cwtching up – that’s cuddling in the local lingo – on a camping chair with a book (and preferably a glass of wine) in hand; if you fancy treating yourself a bit more, the Laura Rose Hair salon is on the grounds of this park too for colours, cuts and styling. Makeover finished, show off the new ‘do on an evening out at the pubs of Llandeilo within a 10-minute drive (this town’s also where to head for small supermarkets if you need essentials). Local buses are accessible from close to the site – simply pull the friendly hosts aside for more details on schedules – if you’d like to leave the car behind and embrace more of an eco-friendly weekend away. Really want to give the planet a helping hand? Get those hiking boots on and spend your hol ambling along the public walking path starting right from site for explores without leaving a carbon footprint. If you’ve brought the bike along, you could also put pedal to metal and cycle along the scenic surrounding country roads.

Being virtually next to the Brecon Beacons National Park, this site is a convenient base for a hiking hol – so why not kick off your trekking trip with a jaunt up the steep slope towards 13th-century Carreg Cennen Castle (about 15 minutes’ drive away) for memorable views over the local area? Another historical structure to investigate is Dinefwr Castle, about the same distance from Penhill Farm; for strolls that are easier on the legs, set off for the fantastic floral displays at Aberglasney Gardens and the National Botanic Garden of Wales (both within a half-hour drive of the site) instead. Amble underground at the Roman and Victorian gold mines of Dolaucothi afterwards, then head back east into the Brecon Beacons for further explores beneath the earth’s surface in the labyrinthine tunnels of the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (55 minutes). If it’s a bright day and it feels like a shame to miss out on the sunshine, Llansteffan beach is 50 minutes' drive away.
