The dramatic coastline of north-eastern Scotland – with its rugged coves, sheltered inlets and windswept clifftop walks – is the setting for Cloak Caravan Park, a family‑run holiday park on a farm a 10-minute drive south of Stonehaven. Come here for the spectacular sea views, stay for the luxury accommodation, which is in pristinely maintained and light-filled microlodges that sleep up to four people. Each caravan has a fully equipped kitchen (with gas hob, oven, microwave, kettle and an assortment of utensils and crockery), a dining area and a mezzanine floor with a double bed. The dining table converts to a double bed, and there’s also a sofa bed (though please note that bedding is supplied only for the mezzanine and dining-table beds). The bathroom has a shower cubicle, and there’s an outside area with views as far as the sea. You might also open the curtains in the morning to catch sight of some Highland cattle grazing outside your caravan. Stonehaven is the place to visit for shops and restaurants serving locally caught seafood; however, the nearest dining spot is less than a mile away in Catterline (five minutes’ drive, or a 15-minute walk). Local explorations might take you to RSPB Scotland Fowlsheugh, whose ragged cliffs attract breeding guillemots, razorbills and other seabirds in the warmer months; or to Dunnottar Castle, its ruins sitting atop a rocky spur overlooking the North Sea. If you’re after shaded trails, head into the Dunnottar Woods. All of these hiking areas are within a five-minute drive.

Stonehaven (10 minutes’ drive) has a shingle and sand beach that’s popular with anglers, and a pretty harbour lined with seafood restaurants. Also on the harbour is a company arranging paddleboard coastal tours. If the North Sea is a bit too chilly for your toes, head to Stonehaven’s Olympic-sized (and heated) outdoor pool. Just inland from the town of Montrose (35 minutes), the estuary of the River South Esk forms the Montrose Basin, an area of tidal mudflats that attracts migratory and breeding birds. Local historical artefacts – from archaeological finds to maritime items – are on display at the Montrose Museum. In Aberdeen (35 minutes), on a green headland that supports two golf courses, is Walker Park, topped by the Girdle Ness Lighthouse designed by Robert Stevenson. Indoor attractions include the Aberdeen Science Centre, a maritime museum and an art gallery.
