If you’ve been flirting with the idea of communal living, you can get a short-term taste of how it all works at Beech Hill Community Campsite. At this peaceful site in mid-Devon (about 35 minutes’ drive from Exeter), a group of people with the same passion for the environment share land, resources and responsibilities. Guests set up on a secluded grass area fringed by leafy beech trees and next to what might be considered the beating heart of this low-impact site: an apple orchard and vegetable garden producing food for the community. It is a gorgeous setting, conducive to relaxing days exploring the local countryside with your four-legged companion. Beech Hill is a five-minute walk from the Two Moors Way, which links Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks (both about 45 minutes’ drive), with miles of walking and cycling routes through farmland and woodlands. Evenings might be spent sitting around the fire (or at the table in the communal outdoor kitchen) exchanging stories and experiences with fellow visitors. The kitchen has two gas hobs, running water and a range of cooking utensils. You’re also welcome to light up a barbecue, and provisions can be sourced from the community store in Kennerleigh (10 minutes). Of course, you might choose not to cook at all, electing instead to head down to the local pub in Morchard Bishop (five minutes or a half-hour walk). Amenities – simple but thoughtfully maintained – include composting toilets and gas- and solar-powered showers, plus a washing-up area and recycling points.

Mi è piaciuto I chose to stay at Beech Hill whilst walking the Two Moors Way / Devon Coast to Coast after seeing some good reviews online.

The site is in a perfect location just off the trail which was ideal for me and was really great value compared to other locations nearby.

Upon arriving at Beech Hill I had a warm welcome from a couple of the residents who gave me all the info I needed and showed me where everything was.

The site itself is beautiful, next to an orchard surround by mature trees which let the sunshine in and kept the wind at bay.

Another feature which was hugely appreciated was the camp kitchen, a wooden structure open on two sides with gas stoves, sink, crockery and cutlery and even a small fridge. As I was camping with just a small tent, having somewhere to sit, cook, eat and relax was a game changer.

The site is sustainability and environmentally conscious with composting toilets and solar showers.

I spoke to a few residents of the community all of whom were lovely and nothing was too much trouble.

I highly recommend Beech Hill and can’t wait to visit again if I’m passing through the area.

Mi è piaciuto Loved my stay at this community campsite about a 15-minute drive to the north-west of Crediton. Although I was the only camper, I enjoyed chatting with some of the volunteers who were making apple juice from the old orchard, which is also home to the campsite. They even gave me a glass to taste - delicious! The communal firepit was a welcome addition, and there's a well-stocked wood shed nearby. The campsite also features a lovely undercover communal kitchen space with gas-burners, fridge and table, and there are fab hot showers and long-drop toilets nearby. Wonderful place!

Mi è piaciuto Lovely secluded setting amongst the trees. Rustic feel with solar shower (very warm!) and compost toilets. Very dog friendly. The owners were very welcoming and friendly. Camp kitchen area ideal for wet weather. Had a lovely swim in the pool, perfect on a hot day after walking the Two Moors Way.
This would be a great choice for a large group or family celebration.

In Exeter (35 minutes’ drive), the interior of the Gothic cathedral, with its mighty stone vaults and columns, is a sight to behold. Alternatively, you can head to Northernhay Gardens. This green area spreads at the bottom of Exeter Castle, first built by William the Conqueror, though not much remains of that original structure. Among the National Trust properties in the area are Killerton and Castle Drogo (both 45 minutes). The former is a Georgian mansion with rooms dedicated to period fashions, plus landscaped gardens. Castle Drogo looks like a structure from the Middle Ages, but it was built in the early 20th century, and its elegant interiors hold elaborate glass chandeliers and other decorative items. Overlooking the River Exe, Powderham Castle and Gardens (an hour) is a 14th-century castle with guided tours of the interiors, plus a Victorian walled garden and a deer park. Throughout the year, the castle hosts a number of events, from music concerts to seasonal fairs.
