Those buff beaches in Sicily are within easy driving distance of the park: head to Arenella – one of the most popular in Syracuse – 10 minutes away or lounge in the sun in between the almond trees and clear blue waters lapping the island’s coast at Marchesa di Cassibile beach (20 minutes). For must-see city sights the day after beach times, there’s the old town of Ortigia just past Syracuse for the Roman Ruins and Neapolis Archaeological Park (15 minutes); a half an hour drive instead will take you to Noto for fancy palaces including the Palazzio Ducezio and Palazzio Nicolaci (make sure to swing by the cathedral as well for good measure). Balance urban venturing with a bit of nature by bopping over to Plemmirio Nature Reserve, a place of protected beaches accessible on hikes where you can deep water solo or snorkel in the Ionian Sea.
