For culture instead of clip-clopping across the green with your clubs, Warendorf old town (20 minutes) has a preserved medieval centre worth a wander around. Its surrounds are also a hotspot for horse riding if you’d like to hoof it about the area aboard a beast of burden. To ride on a boat instead, trips along the Dortmund-Ems Canal (40 minutes) are a restful way to spend an afternoon. Rather get in the water than bob about on its surface? The Bad Rothenfelde Sole SPA Therme thermal baths (25 minutes) are just the spot for sitting and soaking in the soothing heat. Seek out the local scenery at the fab Baumwipfelpfad Bad Iburg nature park (30 minutes), where you can learn a little about woodland life in the museum before setting out on forest trails, climbing up to an elevated pathway for a walk among the treetops or taking the lift up to the lookout tower to see the landscape from above. To blend a bit of history into your trip, set off for Nordkirchen Castle (an hour and five minutes) to peer in awe at the biggest moated castle in the West­phalia re­gion.
