Need a bit of colour in your life? How about some of those gorgeous shades of green that mid Wales is famed for? Given its name, it’ll no doubt not surprise you to find that Valley View Falconry is generously bestowed with splendid views to feast your eyes upon. Settle in for a stay on this smallholding 10 minutes’ drive from the little town of Rhayader and you’ll most likely get the impression that you’re truly in the middle of nowhere as you wander around the peaceful site greeting your fellow residents (alpacas, donkeys, goats and rheas among them). In fact, this slice of rural loveliness is a mere mile or so from the A44, for pleasingly easy arrivals and getaways. Owner Tim isn’t just a farmer, though – he’s also rather keen on wildlife. That makes him a great person to chat to if you need advice on where to spot the area’s various wild inhabitants nearby. He can also give you tips on where to fish, where to go birdwatching and some of the best places to snap your landscape pics. Speak to him nicely and he may even let you have a go at flying some of his birds of prey. The falconry experience (in which you get to meet owls, hawks and falcons and learn how to call them to hand) will cost you extra but it’s worth it for a rare chance to get up close and personal with these handsome birds. Your own digs will be in one of the traditional colourful wooden wagons, now all spruced up with plenty of creature comforts. There’s no electricity but you’ll have lanterns and solar-powered fairy lights, along with a woodburning stove to keep things cosy (it’s also mighty handy as a place to boil water for your morning cuppa). Bedding and bottled water are provided, but you’ll need to bring towels. Trad-style washing facilities are in the wagons, and there’s a proper loo close by too. If you fancy cooking yourself up an alfresco feast you’ve got the choice of a barbecue, an open fire and a gas burner, along with outdoor tables for a meal with a beaut backdrop. Should the DIY approach not appeal or the Welsh weather takes a turn you can always escape into town for a pub dinner or a curry.

Should you not be able to do the site’s falconry day, you can see some of the splendid birds over at Wales’ first official red kite feeding centre on Gigrin Farm, 10 minutes away. Other good spots for birdwatchers (and those who just fancy a walk) are Gilfach Nature Reserve and Elan Valley Estate, both around 15 minutes from the site. Evening badger hunts and bug safaris are also held at Elan Valley – check for details of current events. If you’re keen to head for the hills on horseback, there’s a riding centre 15 minutes away that can sort that for you, and give your nippers a taster of pony riding. Should you prefer to stay closer to the ground, try your luck at the local fishing ponds or the River Wye (for which you’ll need to pop into the local newsagent for a permit). It goes without saying that there are some fab walks around these parts, taking in rivers, waterfalls and craggy hills as you go. If you’ve got canoes, launch them on the River Wye from Rhyader or any number of spots nearby; if not there’s a rental centre 45 minutes away. While in Rhyader, don’t miss a visit to Welsh Royal Crystal, to see the production of handmade crystal in action.
