Even folk who face frequent struggles with train delays will be mighty pleased that these particular railway carriages have come to a halt… Now retired from active service, the smartly converted carriages have found a fab place to rest: housing guests at Pen-Rhos Luxury Glamping, a peaceful Powys glampsite. Their new lifestyle has seen them receive a smart spruce-up that’s left each one with a cosy bed, ensuite bathroom and a cute little kitchen area, plus big glass doors that open out onto a private deck (a splendid spot for sipping wine and gazing out at your scenic surrounds, one might suggest…). Want to see more of those surrounds? Head straight out into the hills for hikes, bike rides and horse rides on many a mile of quiet trail, or take the half-hour drive to the Elan valley for lakeside rambles. Local towns are worth a look too, especially if you choose to soothe sore muscles at the spa town of Llandrindod Wells (20 minutes’ drive), or time your stay to coincide with the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells (half an hour). There are shops and restaurants in both towns too, of course, but if you want something a bit closer to base it’s a five-minute drive or half-hour walk to the local village of Llanbister, where there’s a friendly pub for drinks and dinner (it also cooks up a mean curry to eat on site or take away too).

Attractions à proximité

Give the car a rest for the day and take to the local paths for a walk or a bike ride – a ramble of an hour or so can take you to the ruins of Castell Tin Boeth, coming back via the pretty churches in Llananno and Llanbister. Pedal for an hour instead to get to the ruined abbey at Abbeycwmhir. A riding school is 20 minutes’ drive away if you’d rather hoof about on horseback. Follow up the ruin visits with a ramble around a castle that did survive: Powis Castle (45 minutes’ drive) is now home to a stunning collection of sculpture, paintings and things picked up from around India and the Far East. The gorgeous gardens (all Italianate terraces, statues and herbaceous borders) are certainly worth a stroll too. If you’re in charge of small sorts on a damp day, take them off to Quackers Play Centre (25 minutes) to shoot down the astro slide and play in the ball pond. Once the weather’s looking up, take the 40-minute drive over to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre for animal encounters.
