Camped 10 feet from a stream sounded great so calm and relaxing

A aimé : A beautiful, tranquil and wild escape tucked away in the hills of rural Devon. Plenty of flat grass to pitch on and the option of woodland camping if preferred. A clear stream borders the site. I like that fires were allowed and it wasn’t busy.

N'a pas aimé: Site in general was very clean but compost toilet seemed disused

A aimé : Beautiful private space, left to our own devices in a peaceful woodland. Very friendly dog Bear! Compost toilet clean and really felt part of nature with lovely footpaths around and deer seen close by in the morning.

A aimé : What a beautiful and serene place to wild camp. Run by a lovely family with a wonderful dog - BEAR <3 The river was absolutely gorgeous to swim in and as soon as the kids got in, a kingfisher flew right between them. Very special few days reconnecting, thank you.

A aimé : Bear the dog came to visit our dog and family several times during our stay- we absolutely loved him! An incredibly peaceful, beautiful spot. Also liked the compostable toilets and having the stream nearby. We were also sold some very delicious homemade biscuits made by the owner’s children. Such a lovely stay- thank you!

N'a pas aimé: We arrived and when we pulled in the grass was all overgrown, everything was untidy and run down, we were followed in by a black lab dog and we drove in the site and got stuck in the van due to the poor ground conditions. When we attempted to get out of being stuck a gentleman stood and the entrance waving his arms around and then a few minutes later arrived in his land rover by which point we had got ourselves out. My partner got out to talk to him and he was rather short with my partner. Immediately we felt like we were not welcome on site. We parked up on the hardstanding area. We booked to visit with our dog, the black lab would not leave our van and was trying to get in our van etc. The owner didn't atempt to take his dog with him when he left and didn't seem to carr that the dog had not left with him. We left and found a more welcoming site further up the road.

A aimé : We were the only people there! The site was amazing - basic but that's how we like it. Camped next to a bubbling stream with no other sounds in a beautiful valley. The firepit and long drop were great and our dog made friends with 'Bear' the dog, who came to visit. The road just before and after the site was pot-holed and tight for our T4 - but this wasn't a big deal. We'll definately be back.

For varied days out along the coast, tramping over hills and wandering through forests, head to Exmoor National Park (20 minutes' drive), an area that's home to some of the prettiest parts of Devon and Somerset. The Tarr Steps woodland (30 minutes) is one spot within the park that shouldn't be missed, while if you find yourself in the mood for some time at the coast you can head to the well-preserved seaside village of Porlock (50 minutes) or lively family resorts like Minehead (50 minutes). The south of Devon is also within reach here, so days out to see Exeter Cathedral (50 minutes) or relaxing on Exmouth beach (55 minutes) are on the cards. A little closer to home, you could also frolic through the foliage at Knightshayes Gardens (20 minutes), a historic property set in the grounds of a Victorian country house and managed by the National Trust.
