You may be content to enjoy the sight of sheep grazing in the pasture, but if you’re keen to explore the surrounding countryside, you can walk directly from your pitch to the Gurk riverside, into the forest or to the small lake at Naturbadeteich Sirnitz (40 minutes’ stroll) for wild swimming. There are cycle rides that follow quiet winding roads aroundabout, and if you’re feeling any aches or pains from all that activity, book a shiatsu massage with the site owner. When you’re holidaying with younger kids, you’ll find plenty to do too. Minimundus is a theme park showcasing all the major attractions of Europe (think the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa) in miniature. Most youngsters will also appreciate watching flying displays at Adler Arena Burg Landskron, with the backdrop of a medieval castle, or getting up close to macaques at Affenberg Landskron (all 40 minutes’ drive). Got older offspring with you? Test their mettle on the hair-raising slide down the outside of landmark Pyramidenkogel Tower (55 minutes), or head for its upper floors to admire spectacular views over Lake Wörthersee. Sneak a bit of culture onto your holiday agenda with a visit to the sculpture park at Albeck Castle (five minutes), where you can also watch alfresco concerts over the summer months.
