The location at the very tip of the Llŷn Peninsula means you’ll have to make a bit of an effort to get to Mynydd Mawr Camping Site – but boy, is that journey worth it. The views from this family-run site are quite spectacular, looking out over the sea towards Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) in one direction and the nearby mountain landscapes in the other. Well away from urban development, main roads and busy lifestyles, this is a fabulous place to slow down, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and soak up the gorgeous scenery. It’s particularly excellent at sunset, so you may like to bring along a few snacks and sundowners ready for the evening; you’ll also be allowed to light a campfire or barbecue as long as it’s in an off-ground container. Facilities on site include a bathroom block with toilets and metered showers, plus a chemical disposal point, a freezer for ice packs and a washing-up area that also serves as a handy local information point. The on-site café sells breakfasts, light lunches, drinks, ice creams and tempting spread of homemade cakes (essential after a long walk on the nearby Wales Coast Path, of course…). Speaking of the coast path, it’s right there next to the site, so it’s easy to set off on a jaunt to places like Porthor (Whistling Sands beach) or the village of Aberdaron. If you don’t fancy the walk, it’s a 10-minute drive to Aberdaron, which has pubs, shops, cafés and takeaways as well as a lovely sandy beach.

A aimé Great view of the sea and bardsey island, toilet block and showers generally clean.

N'a pas aimé Not much around to walk to so had to leave the pitch, the field is very uneven so needed chocks for the campervan which would have been nice to have a warning about before we arrived so we could prepare for this. Showers required £1 coins which luckily we had but again I don’t remember seeing any advance warning of this.

A aimé Location is beautiful. Close to Wales Coast Path. Also a couple of small climbs to absolutely stunning viewing points. Good toilet and shower facilities.

N'a pas aimé It was not too peaceful on the weekend as to my liking, though not the the level that it became a problem. Not too flat. Paying with a card didn't work.

A aimé Friendly host, plenty of space and toilets and showers were always clean. Stunning location, right on the coastal path. My second visit and definitely will be returning again.

Attractions à proximité

That sea view from the site is lovely, but it’s just one of the fabulous coastal vistas to check out while you’re in the area. The sandy beach at Aberdaron (10 minutes’ drive) is a great choice for a family day out, with rockpools and sheltered waves to paddle in, and you’ll also want to check out the intriguing ‘Whistling Sands’ of Porthor (15 minutes), so named because they squeak when you walk on the beach on a hot day. Other options include the quiet Porth Iago (20 minutes), stylish Abersoch (half an hour) and surfers’ favourite Porth Neigwl (35 minutes). For lots of guests, a real highlight is a visit to Porthdinllaen (half an hour) and Tŷ Coch Inn, often voted among the world’s best pubs for its fabulous setting right on the beach. For something a bit different, take a boat trip to Bardsey Island, a nature reserve known for its spiritual history, from Porth Meudwy (10 minutes) or head to Llanbedrog (half an hour) to hike up the Iron Man before a dip in the sea.
