It’s a mere five minutes’ walk to sandy Cala de la Fosca Beach to rent paddleboards and kayaks to have a splash along the rugged coastline, or alternatively head to the laid-back beach bar for tapas and a cold beer. Cala s’Alguer (20 minutes) is tucked into a sheltered rocky cove with calm water for swimming and a backdrop of cute whitewashed cottages. Craving some action? Go horse riding (10 minutes), or practise your swing on the golf course (20 minutes), while the more hardcore among you can hike or cycle on forested trails through the hilly Massís de les Gavarres (35 minutes). In the evening, take a stroll to the ethereal ruined cloister and water garden at Claustre del Mas del Vent (10 minutes’ walk), or have a potter around the marina full of yachts in Palamós (five minutes’ drive). For a taste of Catalonian heritage, Girona (45 minutes) is a gorgeous mishmash of medieval walls, an atmospheric Jewish Quarter and Moorish bath houses. You can go in search of ‘Games of Thrones’ film locations (start at the steps outside Cathedral de Santa Maria) and then have a stroll past pastel-coloured houses along the River Onyar walkway.
