Explore the park on foot, bike or horse back or, for something different, have a go at off-roading. You can also follow several trails somewhere that may surprise you: the ocean – take a diving tour 15 minutes’ drive from the site. The history of this part of Puglia can often skew towards the natural, and that’s something you definitely don’t want to overlook. Two absolute must-sees are the Grottone di Manaccora (a huge natural cave used first for worship and then as a burial ground), a five-minute walk along the beach, and the Necropolis of Merinum outside Vieste. While in Vieste, be sure to stick around as there’s plenty to do: make the time for the 13th-century Castello Svevo, the 19th-century lighthouse, the Pizzomunno monolith and the scenic views from the promontory.
