There are many things that draw people to seek out riverside spots for their hols – you may fancy a bit of fishing, or perhaps you’ve got an eye on the scenic picnic potential, or maybe you secretly (or not so secretly) just yearn to get in for a wild swim… Whichever of the above you’ve got in mind matters not, for they’re all covered at Powys site Riverside Caravan and Camping Park, in little Llangammarch Wells and 15 minutes’ drive from the ancient market town of Builth Wells. As the name intimates, this four-acre park is indeed on the riverside – the banks of the Irfon river, to be more specific. Fishing is allowed on site for those clutching the correct permit, and there’s direct access to the water for those who want to cool their feet with a tentative paddle or take the plunge for a full-on swim. There’s plenty of space for open-air eats too, either a picnic or a cookout at the barbecue area; covered gazebos have also been set up just in case the weather isn’t amenable (and they’re also piled high with handy things like games of giant Jenga, footballs, hula hoops and an electricity supply for recharging your gadgets). Time out in the open air might include watching over the kids at the playground, taking the dog for a walk along the riverbank from the village or around one of the other excellent dog-walking spots locally (there’s a washing machine on site to deal with any muddy pawprints they leave you with) or ambling over to the local pub, 10 minutes’ stroll away. Being in a dark sky area, there's often also some fab stargazing to be had by night.

A aimé Lovely quiet and calm camping site, lovely big pitch for our tent and ample open green spaces for the children to play. Loved that the river is accessible for swimming and paddle boarding!

A aimé Very accommodating, had a family get together and all of us were together. My electric hook up didn't reach and the offered an extension free of charge. Campsite laid out toys and equipment for all children to play with (goals, nets, toddler slides)

A aimé Such a well managed site clean and tidy such a welcoming young lady who was helpful with information and made us feel very welcome loved the pod and site in general plenty for families with kids to do and lovely to just chill by pod watching the day go by. Facilities were great nice toilet block and place to wash up after tea would recommend as well worth money spent on staying here

A aimé Gorgeous campsite, really clean and spacious. Stunning river and my son could fish. Perfect for the dog too. I did have to phone in advance to ask about the dog and the river as there was a review saying dogs couldn’t. They can but just not on the beach in the farmers field which has animals so totally understandable but we could access the river from the campsite with the dog. Also ideal for families and they had a swing ball and football nets set up. Wonderful part of the country

A aimé A really lovely site, well maintained and run by friendly people. Charging for the showers feels reasonable when they are so clean. The river is a delight - paddling by the site itself but walk upstream a bit and it's deep enough for a quick swim. Pitchup's reference to a pub in walking distance is out of date - fortunately I'd checked with the site before we arrived foodless! It wasn't busy when we were there and was wonderfully quiet in the evenings with fabulous starry skies. Spacious pitches - very generously laid out.

A aimé This site is fantastic, everyone is so friendly and the owners are lovely.
We had an issue with our electric in our van (not the sites) and the ladies came out with spare cables to see if that would help, they even found someone on site to come and have a look for us too.
Honestly they went above what they needed to do and we really appreciated that.
The site is very clean, tidy and well looked after . They have even thought about families with kids toys, play area and little things like sponges, washing up liquid for the washing up areas.
The river is lovely to be sit by or paddle in.
The site is so peaceful and private.
We will definitely be coming back as it’s fantastic.

Itinéraire

This part of the world has many enticing options for folk who like a good walk or bike ride on their hols: as well as local riverside paths, you might also like to consider setting off for the Elan Valley (half an hour’s drive) to ramble by lakes and waterfalls, or aim south to the trails of the Brecon Beacons National Park. For other outdoorsy days, there’s a fine golf course in Builth Wells (15 minutes) and the chance to see big birds take flight at the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhyader (half an hour). The Brecon Mountain Railway (an hour) is a great choice for those who’d like to see the scenery at slow pace, and the Dolaucothi Roman gold mines likewise for folk intrigued by what lies beneath their feet. There’s a lot going on throughout the year in this area too – time your trip cleverly to tie in with the Hay-on-Wye Book Festival (45 minutes), the parades of fine beasts at the Royal Welsh Show (20 minutes) or the famed World Bog Snorkelling Championships (10 minutes).
