N'a pas aimé Our experience at Mortal Man Hotel Campsite was very disappointing. From the moment we arrived, the check-in process was extremely slow and took around 30 minutes because the receptionist was repeatedly absent from the reception area.

The biggest issue was the campsite itself. The facilities are almost non-existent — there is only a toilet, with no drinking water, showers, sinks, electricity, or any other basic camping facilities. We also were not informed anywhere before booking that cars are not allowed in the camping area, which was a problem for us as we use a tailgate tent attached to our vehicle.

One evening, we returned to our tent and found that smoke from a fire nearby had filled the area so heavily that it was impossible to sit outside or even comfortably stay inside the tent. When we reported the issue to reception and asked for help, the response from the staff was dismissive and no effort was made to find a solution.

Considering the lack of facilities, the missing information before booking, the poor customer service, and the attitude of the staff, we feel the price is completely unjustified. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this campsite and would advise others looking for a comfortable camping experience to choose another location.

A aimé Great location by the river with covered sitting area, friendly staff, and owned by a great pub. Late check-in wasn't a problem, after getting soaking on the fells for the day and wanting a valley site to get yourself sorted for the night.

N'a pas aimé Basic but reflected in price and is a pop-up campsite. Some pop-up sites are charging £25/30!

A aimé It was ok once I settled in

N'a pas aimé Unwelcoming proprietor, made me fill in forms for sleeping in a field with NO WATER!! Apparently says on pitch up that you bring your own. Wouldn't allow me to sleep in my car either, for insurance purposes. If it's a wild camp, you surely don't charge people, or have those portaloos. He did let me fill up from the bar but the attention to comfort of guests was minimal. I know it's cheap, you rough it for that price, but water is a basic need and you shouldn't feel like a pain in the arse guest for asking for it! Sad how this pub has gone downhill

We do clearly state on our Pitchup listing that this is a wild, off-grid pop-up campsite with no running water available on the camping field, so guests know what to expect before booking.

While there isn't a mains water supply on the campsite itself, the pub is typically open 10:30am - 10pm each evening, and guests are welcome to use our free water station themselves, purchase bottled water from the bar or the vending machine located at reception during opening hours.

We're also sorry if our insurance policy regarding sleeping in vehicles was disappointing. Unfortunately, this is not something we're able to make exceptions to. Our staff member did however suggest nearby roads, lanes and laybys, which there is plenty of.

For a £10 per person pitch, we aim to provide a simple, affordable wild camping experience while still offering facilities such as two portable toilets, benches and access to staying in the beautiful nature of Troutbeck valley between the hub of walking routes up the fells, which many guests appreciate as an added convenience.

We're sorry to hear you felt unwelcome, as that is never our intention. We wish you all the best with your future camping trips.

A aimé Lovely staff, nice location with Mountain Views. Good walks nearby. Small camping section but really comfortable. Really good budget option. Will definitely be visiting here again!

N'a pas aimé Wasn’t a campsite as advertised, more of a patch of grass where they allowed a few tents, directly outside a pub. We arrived and turned straight around and stayed elsewhere, despite already paying to stay, we would’ve rather lost our money than stay there. Didn’t feel safe. Tried to call to get our money back but no answer on the telephone number.

Our listing describes the site as a wild camping off-grid pop-up, and the photos accurately show the field, so guests know the style of camping they're booking. It isn't a traditional campsite, and we feel our prices also reflect this.

The campsite is not directly outside the pub (it is a 2-3 min walk). There is a field and a stream between the pub and our camping field, and we're situated in the beautiful Troutbeck Valley, surrounded by the fells in a peaceful rural setting.

We're sorry to read that you didn't feel safe, although we're not sure what gave you that impression as you chose not to stay. If there was something specific that caused you concern, we'd genuinely appreciate you letting us know so we can understand and address it if necessary.

As our listing accurately describes the site, the facilities provided, and the style of camping on offer, we're unable to offer a refund simply because you decided not to stay after arriving. We wish you all the best with your future camping trips.

A aimé EVERYTHING! This place is a little slice of heaven, you are surrounded by mountains, and can set off by foot to all the hikes your heart desires. I was meant to stay 3 nights and ended up staying 12. Its just perfect. The campsite itself is magical, you get a real taste of wild camping and the stream helped me to sleep like a dream. I instantly felt peace wash over me when I arrived. Sat on the swinging bench and a butterfly landed on my knee, if you want to connect with nature but still have the comfort of a pub 3 mins walk, a cute cafe 10 mins walk, and a gym with a shower and spa a beautiful hour walk a way, with a well stocked garage nearby than I cannot stress enough that this is the place.

Futuremore, the team at the mortal man cant do enough for you, always welcoming with smiles, didnt make us feel like a nuisance even though we pretty much became part of the furniture, always let us to sit in and our charge phones. And the food is incredible, even for my vegan friend they dished out the scrambled tofu and the nut roast, utterly delicious even for myself who eats meat. And the bar staff know how to pour a pint, nothing better after finishing a hike, highly recommend the Guinness. And Larry the cat is so frigging cute. Theres 10 cats that live at the pub all ready for cuddles.

If you're thinking about a holiday park instead because of the shower and the ease, then don't. Give this a try, youll be much more fullfilled and nature nourished. Theres wild strawberries growing off the drive way! Then we had wild raspberries and bilberries on the walks close to the camp. Plenty of parking also. I didnt drive but it was easy to get to with a über from windermere station.

The stream is a natural feature of the site, and as with any countryside location, there can be midges and other insects during warmer months, so bringing insect repellent is good advice.

We ask guests to camp responsibly, and while we can't control individual guests' actions, we encourage everyone to minimise their impact on the natural environment.

We're glad you enjoyed the stream though, and hope future visitors looking for a simple, back-to-basics wild pop up camping experience will enjoy what the site has to offer.

As this is a pop-up wild camping site, running water is not provided, which is typical for this style of camping. We do make this clear in the booking information so guests know what to expect before they arrive.
