Waking up in a gorgeous wildflower meadow is pretty special – and even better when you're in the comfort of a stylishly furnished bell tent too… That's the setup at Umberslade Glamping, where smart tents are scattered around two meadows on a private estate near Tanworth in Arden, with splendid countryside views all around. In a secluded corner of Warwickshire, it’s a smart spot for family camping holidays, with lots of organised fun to get stuck into on site if you fancy it. Kick the morning off in style by heading straight for Espresso Farm Coffee for your shot of caffeine and freshly made pastries. A barbecue is provided at your tent, but there's also homemade food available all day if you don't fancy getting the grill going. After you've done breakfast, well – where to start with the activities around the site? You can join guided walks around the estate (well-behaved dogs are more than welcome), go forest bathing and try your hand at clay shooting. For the kids, perhaps a good run-around in the heated play barn (an extremely welcome feature for rainy days), cuddling the farm animals or riding ponies. They can also learn to cook in a mud kitchen and generally get muddy at the Forest School (maybe you should pack their wellies…).

Feeling the call of the outdoors? Options for outdoorsy days out include Umberslade Adventure (10 minutes’ drive), a family-friendly spot with archery, zipwires, tree climbing and low ropes courses. The slightly more challenging Bear Grylls Adventure (25 minutes) has high ropes, a shark dive, escape rooms and an assault course designed for marines. While rowing boats will keep up some of the action in Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes), a more sedate time might involve exploring Shakespeare’s Birthplace or catching a show at one of the three Shakespeare-inspired theatres. Cadbury World (30 minutes) in Birmingham will bring chocolate making into the mix. However, if it’s science you’re interested in, Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum (40 minutes) might be your first stop. There’s the West Midland Safari Park (45 minutes) too, for those who want to see some wildlife up close. When you fancy a visit to somewhere historic, Packwood House (15 minutes) is a local Tudor manor house and Warwick Castle (25 minutes) has years of history and a knight’s village and turrets among other historic features.

A aimé : The tent was spacious and clean and the mattresses were comfortable. Site was pretty and quiet and the tents were generously spaced out and well away from the entrance and exit. Onsite food options were good. The free firewood and fire basket were a nice touch. Kids playpark was lovely. Well kept and interesting pieces of equipment slightly different from the norm.

N'a pas aimé: Teeth cleaning and washing options - The toilets/washrooms had only hot running water and are shared with visitors to the farm park, so although they were kept very clean it felt unhygienic to brush teeth there. The other option was the washing up sinks outside, which again felt inappropriate. There was significant road noise when we arrived, but not for the rest of the weekend. Not sure if this was because of wind direction or traffic levels. Had it continued it would have marred our stay, but thankfully it didn’t. If I was being really picky I’d say describing it as glamping (unless you paid for the more expensive tents) is a bit of an exaggeration. It’s a tent, with some mattresses and fairy lights. However, it is exactly as described if you read the full details.
