Speed through the Shropshire Hills by bike or bide your time and explore the network of peaceful paths at Meadowtown Farm, a back to basics campsite set on a 32-acre site in the west of the county. Set on top of gently sloping hills, the views here are exceptional and stretch for miles around. In the evening, sunsets light up the sky, followed (on cloudless nights) by pitch-black skies full of stars… So turn your phone off, go without the internet and return to nature at its best. (Do bring a torch, though, as it tends to get very dark around these parts at night). This spacious site is dog-friendly, allows barbecues and welcomes campfires in suitable parts of its grounds. It's located in the hamlet of Meadowtown, a rural spot roughly 15 minutes' drive from the Welsh border and 35 minutes from Shrewsbury town centre. Handily, the nearest pub is a quick 10-minute drive down the road. Further locally sourced food supplies can be picked up at a farm shop 10 miles away. For hill walks, you'll be 15 minutes' drive from the dramatic rocky slopes of the Stiperstones, while cyclists have direct access to a national cycle route at the end of the lane.

Walks and hikes abound in this western part of Shropshire: you're within easy reach of top-rated spots like the Stiperstones (15 minutes' drive), Offa's Dyke Path (15 minutes) or Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (40 minutes). For more wild days out, explore nature reserves like The Bog Visitor Centre (10 minutes), hire a canoe to paddle on the River Severn at Ironbridge (45 minutes) or make tracks to Rhayader's Red Kite Feeding Station (an hour and 10 minutes). Turn to Shrewsbury (35 minutes) when you'd like something a little less rural – Shropshire's county town is full of attractions and activities, from sampling the wares at Britain's oldest working brewery to laidback River Severn cruises aboard the much-loved boat Sabrina. It's also got cinemas, a bowling alley and terrific tours of 18th-century Shrewsbury Prison. For historic days out, look to Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (10 minutes) or Wroxeter Roman City (35 minutes) for a slice of the ancient past, or learn more about Shropshire's rich industrial heritage at modern history spots like Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (50 minutes) or Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron (50 minutes).

A aimé : Lovely back to basics site. This was our second stay and we absolutely loved it.

The view over the Shropshire countryside is stunning and we were able to watch the Buzzards, kites and kestrels fly over the neighbouring fields.

There was plenty of firewood and bricks available for a camp fire and the port-a loo was kept clean.

Just a perfect couple of days camping 👍🏻

A aimé : A big thank you to Noah who is top notch on his quad and escorted us to best position on the hillside. Thank you for allowing our Boreas Camping trailer, as the climb to the site is certainly not for caravans.

Fantastic view, brícks to make a fire pit, water and basic toilets.

A aimé : Incredibly beautiful quiet and unspoilt location. Lovely public footpath leading from the upper side of the campsite. Make sure you are well equipped because there’s nothing around for miles.

A aimé : Beautiful scenery and very welcoming guests. Great location to go on hikes. It is much more quiet and less crowded than other camping places.

N'a pas aimé: The area is quite sloped and very exposed to the wind, so don’t expect glamming!
