As the name suggests, Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm is right off the popular Midshires Way footpath, a long-distance trail that runs all the way from the Chiltern Hills up to Stockport at its northern end. And this splendid south Nottinghamshire location also delivers on the animal inhabitants advertised – they've got alpacas here, and what a fantastically fluffy bunch they are. You won't find any kids cooing over them, though, as this is an adults-only setup that thrives on rural peace and quiet. Dogs, however, are permitted on site, and treated to their own exercise area where they can run about and make new friends. Facilities for the humans include smart heated toilet and shower facilities, plus a laundry area. Of an evening, the barbecue area is the place to be in the evening for sipping drinks at sunset or cooking dinner over coals. If you’d rather someone else did the cooking or provided the pints, there are plenty of places to pick up meals and drinks in East Leake, a village less than a mile away from the farm. When not out roaming, guests might like to play golf, ride the local steam train, go fishing, try their luck at the races or get behind the wheel of a supercar – all opportunities that can be reached within a half-hour drive. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around too for walkers who don't fancy the long-distance effort.

A aimé Really lovely small adult only site with great facilities. The owner was very helpful with restaurant and takeaway recommendations on East Leake. All other visitors to the site were very friendly. The owners also have 5 lodges on site which look lovely. I have passed the details to my mom and partner who are always looking for somewhere lovely and local to stay. We will certainly be back at some point!

A aimé Peaceful site with around 9 hard standing pitches, a few grass pitches, and 5 well equipped pods. Facilities were excellent, 2 bathroom, washer/dryer, fridge and books for sharing.

Scenery was stunning with the Nottingham power station on the horizon. Being in the flight path for East Mids Airport was an added bonus, with a handful of planes roaring above us.

East Leake was a great village for shopping, pubs and food.

Definitely be returning.

A aimé Bathrooms were lovely and clean. Only two toilet/showers but we never had to wait.
Alpacas, obviously.
Warm welcome on arrival.
Boardgames available for those evenings in.
20-25min walk into the centre of East Leake.
Pitches are spacious and tidy.

N'a pas aimé Unfortunately it is in the flight path so the peace is interrupted during the day if you're planning on just staying at the site.

A aimé Really clean site, loved the alpacas. Very quiet (other than unavoidable noise from planes that didn’t bother us at all). Great space for dogs to exercise! Nice large pitches with water and electric.

N'a pas aimé Would prefer the toilets to be separate to showers as only two. It was very quiet so not an issue this time, but could see it being more of an issue if the site was busier.

A aimé Fantastic number of limited pitches that are all fully serviced and are of a good size.
Nice and clean facilities to wash and shower etc.
Nice to wander round and see the horses and alpacas.

N'a pas aimé Because it’s on the flight path of EMA, it’s very noisy at night to sleep.

A aimé Super quiet site with horses and alpaca’s
Nice walks and close to town with all the usual shops, pubs and takeaways. It is close to East Midlands Airport but the noise from passing planes is very low and didn’t bother us at all.
Very pleasant site team made us feel very welcome.
Yes we will be coming back if possible

N'a pas aimé If you want to to use an awning you will need rock pegs and a large hammer. as the hard standing bases appear to have quite rocky foundations.

N'a pas aimé Everything else, only 2 unisex showers with toilets. Also the way we were spoken to on arrival was not very welcoming. He asked us if we were smuggling a dog in the van and he wasn't even joking. He then accused us of reversing into his wooden post because it was crooked, my partner has a high level driving licence and I was guiding him. We had paid to stay for the week but left the next day and found a much better campsite with a warm and friendly welcome.
Also must be on the flight path for an airport because the noise of aircraft was loud.

* Large, almost flat pitch, no ramps needed, just minor levelling on steadies
* Ample space even for a 7.5m A Class

* Well-positioned for a 20+ minute, flat and safe walk into East Leake village, with good amenities including shops, cafés and pubs

Attractions à proximité

Close to base, you can ride the steam-powered Great Central Railway (15 minutes' drive); amble towards East Leake and watch the trains puffing through if you only fancy a glimpse. Other local activities of note include spots such as Rushcliffe Golf Course (five minutes), Lakeside Sporting fishing lakes (15 minutes) and Prestwold (10 minutes), where you can get behind the wheel of a turbo-charged car. Visit more motorsport spots, starting with nearby Donington Park Circuit (20 minutes), or try some old-school four-legged racing at Nottingham's racecourse instead. When the heat of the action's worn off, consider taking a trip to the John Taylor & Co bell foundry, the biggest such site in the world. If campanology doesn't quite chime in with your idea of a dream break, perhaps you'll be taken by alternative heritage sites like Calke Abbey (half an hour) or Belvoir Castle (40 minutes), where the architecture and formal gardens are as good as certain to pass muster with history buffs. Rutland Water (45 minutes) is another promising destination if you're minded to get up to walks, bike rides, birdspotting or watersports in a thoroughly natural setting.
