Fishing, of course… Land your own whopper right from Blankaholms Naturcamping in Sweden's Kalmar County, next to a bay on the Tjust archipelago for hours of fabulous – and free – angling. There's wild swimming too if you prefer, or bringing along a canoe or kayak to investigate the archipelago's many bays and islands: whatever activity you plump for, watery days around Sweden's east coast are pretty much a cert. (Even better, boat mooring s available on site for sailor sorts, as well as canoe and boat hire.) Blankaholms is a forest site with plentiful paths nearby for forested walks and cycling… and strolling around eagle-eyed to spy local wildlife: the nature trail next to the grounds is part of the surrounding Blankaviken Nature Reserve's 18 hectares of pasture and forest. An elk park and a heritage railway are around the region for species-spotting and sightseeing day trips; for bookworms and Pippi Longstocking connoisseurs, the Astrid Lindgren theme park is within 50 minutes' drive. Blankaholms is a peaceful and highly handsome site, among plenty of green space with views over the bay. Its facilities include a big playground, a food shop and a service building with a small kitchen, toilets and showers. Shops, cafés and restaurants are all a few minutes' stroll away at Blankaholm town – and as the team cheerfully points out, ice cream is available on site every day.

Local attractions

Blankaholm and its Old Town are 300 metres from Blankaholms Naturcamping and the Blankaviken Nature Reserve is in the surroundings. Västervik, the biggest town in the site's Västervik municipality, is half an hour's drive north at the mouth of the Tjust archipelago. Catch the ferry to the spectacular UNESCO-listed town of Visby from here, or stick around in town to have a natter with the folk at the sailing club or to play golf on the nine- or 18-hole courses. Motor fans should scoot along to the Hjorted Moped Museum 20 minutes' drive away at Hjorted, and animal enthusiasts can snap pics of the inhabitants at the Virum elk park half an hour to the west. Under an hour's drive will land you at the bookish land of Astrid Lindgren's World, in the writer's native city of Vimmerby.

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.

Barbecues are permitted but must be raised off the ground and attended by an adult at all times.

Hired accommodation: SEK1 500,00 (R2 726,11) damage/cleanliness/bracelet deposit is required on arrival and will be refunded on departure after inspection of your unit should no damage/losses be found.

In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.

Changes to your holiday

Modifications are subject to a SEK100,00 (R181,74) fee.
