  • Safari tents in a pine forest on the edge of Gafanha da Boa Hora
  • Two kilometres from the beach; Aveiro 20 minutes' drive
  • Swimming pool, kids' pool, restaurant and summer activities
What’s the best spot for a chilled-out holiday – an urban location so you’re close to amenities? A woodland setting so it’s nice and peaceful? Somewhere close to the sea so you can spend lots of days at the beach? Actually there’s no need to decide on an answer, as Kampaoh Vagueira combines all three into one excellent location, in a pine forest on the edge of the seaside town of Gafanha da Boa Hora. The gorgeous beaches of Vagueira and Areão are both about two kilometres away, both of them great locations for sunbathing, surfing, watching the local fishermen or wildlife spotting (in particular you may spot the grey herons that often pass by here…) This is a laidback area that’s great for beach time, tasty meals, walking, cycling, town wanders – and simply chilling out. However you choose to fill your days you’ll be coming back to a comfortable place to stay, in a safari tent among the trees, with space to relax outside and a comfy space inside with beds (and bed linen), a cool box and electricity and lighting included. The glamping area is part of a larger campsite where you’ll have access to the shared facilities including a swimming pool and kids’ pool, a play area, a café-bar and a restaurant. Kids can also join in with campsite activities through the summer months. Essential services like a launderette and bathrooms are also on site, and being on the edge of town means you’ll be able to walk to various shops and restaurants too.

Local attractions

When you’re wandering back from the town’s Vagueira beach, it’s worth stopping by at the fish market to see what looks good and perhaps pick something up for your dinner; you may also be able to spot local fishermen using the traditional Xávega fishing technique, with large nets pulled back to shore by men or cattle. Elsewhere along the coast, you could head north to Costa Nova (10 minutes’ drive) to see the pretty striped houses, or travel a little way south to the slides and pools of Water Park Splash Wave (five minutes). Heading inland, the little town of Vagos (10 minutes) is a sweet place to visit, with a toy museum and several historic chapels, and Ílhavo (15 minutes) has a maritime museum and the porcelain collections of the Museu Vista Alegre. Aveiro (20 minutes) is also worth a visit, for its canals, museums and striking Art Nouveau architecture. If rural views are more your thing, take wildlife-spotting boat tours with Sterna Aveiro Ria Tours & Birdwatching (15 minutes).
