  • Family-friendly site with direct access to the Lot river
  • Within an hour of Bozouls canyon, Gorges du Tarn and Millau Viaduct
  • Heated pool and water slide; bar and restaurant; summer kids' club
Say a very loud Oui to adventures in the Aveyron from a base at Marmotel, where you can surely pass many a day in sleepy and mellow marmot-style… This fab and family-friendly site by the Lot river is just the ticket for idle and contented days: basking by or in the heated swimming pool, trotting across to the bar for drinks and snacks, or feasting on pizzas and local dishes in the restaurant should keep you serenely occupied for quite some time… or might you prefer to wandering down to the river for fishing, paddling and perhaps a quick 40 winks on the banks…? The site is a couple of minutes’ walk from the small town of Saint Geniez d’Olt and its grand arched bridge spanning the river (adorned with a statue of a marmot… if you were wondering about the name), as well as a decent spread of bars, bakeries and shops around the town. If you’re taking the marmot lifestyle seriously, though, you can pick up your bread and pastries on site and save your energy for swims and snoozing. For those of more energetic disposition, activities like fitness classes, water polo and tennis tournaments and pony rides are arranged in the summer months. The action doesn’t slack off after dark either, with quiz nights, karaoke and dancing for the night owls. A summer kids’ club organises games, shows and competitions for the smaller visitors, and in between there’s slithering down the waterslide, splashing in the paddling pool and hurtling around the playground.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: This is a larger site on the bank of the river Lott. Very good facilities and large pitches. Swimming pool opens @ 8am and has two slides for the young ones to enjoy. We did enjoy the evening entertainment.

Fully-serviced grass pitch (private bathroom amenities)

A revoir

Fully-serviced grass pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The river

Disliked: Pretty much everything. People strolled through our pitch multiple times daily to use our river access. Dogs off leads & barking 24/7, loud groups drinking & screeching at all hours, kids running round screaming until 12:30am, footballs being booted at empty private bathrooms on pitches constantly’boom boom boom’ then to top it all off you have roaring motorbikes round the clock, morning, noon & night (on and off the site, especially when they just sit there revving it to maximum noise for 15mins about 20 times a day, even at 2am) No camping etiquette from other campers, you pay for space and privacy & don’t get it with people just strolling through your pitch like they own it, peering into your tents, laughing between them as they do) facilities are basic. If you’re expecting the private sanitary bathrooms to look like the picture you’ll be very disappointed. They are small, filthy sheds (with your electric hook up in there right under a sink! I don’t mean way back I mean directly under it where water can get at it) floors are covered in mud, leaves, ants …. You have to have footwear on even when showering, and when you do it floods everywhere and everything so you can’t store anything under the sink unit. In our opinion we’ve never camped anywhere worse & it was a delight to get home. If I could rate this in minus digits I would. We are a couple in our mid 30’s who enjoy peace, quiet & time to just relax. If that’s what you think you’ll get here? You thought wrong!

Local attractions

With direct access to the Lot, watery activities will loom large on your agenda: you can hire canoes and kayaks a couple of minutes’ walk from the site, or if you’re up for grander expeditions, make the hour-long car trip to Malène to paddle through the towering Gorges du Tarn. With an equestrian centre in town, a vertigo-inducing combination of zipwires and rope walks at Les Ifers, and quad bike hire and trails at Le Monastère (10 and 50 minutes’ drive), there’s a variety of ways to get about this great region. If you'd prefer to keep it simple, the tourist information centre in town can furnish you with a guide to the 24 hiking trails in the area; if you’re after longer treks, try the wilderness of Bozouls canyon half an hour away, or meanders around and under massive Millau Viaduct (45 minutes). If you like your wanders to have a historic edge to them, check out Château de Calmont d'Olt (half an hour) – join one of the free guided tours, get set for archery and trebuchet shot demos or jump into the full medieval vibe by enrolling the kids in knight school. Gourmets and gastronomes can combine walking trips with tasty treats on tours of the Cistercian abbey and chocolate factory at Bonneval, or heading deep down into the Roquefort caves (45 minutes and an hour and 10 minutes away). Purchasing the cheesy and chocolatey wares is not compulsory at either spot, but then again… why would you not?
