Wildlife meets wellness at Samasati Yoga and Wellness Retreat, a swish glamping site set among 250 acres of virgin Costa Rican rainforest in the lush province of Limón, a few minutes’ drive from Hone Creek.
Sloths, toucans and capuchin monkeys are among the native beasts you may spy (or hear) as you take a wander on interactive nature trails around the property (and keep your eyes peeled for fluttering overhead too – Costa Rica has more than 800 native and migratory species to look out for…) There are more chances to get close to native life too – the site can help organise zipline tours through the tree canopy, or get you involved in indigenous cacao ceremonies for an insight into traditional lifestyles.
And what of the wellness side of things? The spa on site has a menu of signature treatments including massages, reiki and reflexology, and yoga classes run twice a day. Forest bathing, hot tub soaks and meditation are also options – as is a chilled afternoon of hanging around in the hammock out on your deck. Fuel up for all of this with tasty locally-sourced meals from the restaurant buffet and then up the relaxation factor with a glass of wine or beer (or a coffee or juice) from the bar. All sorts of special diets can be catered for – just let the folk on site know ahead of arrival.
Accommodation is likely to induce warm, relaxed feels too: each of the cosy wooden casitas is surrounded by a serene swathe of tropical garden and has a smart private bathroom and comfy beds made up.

Local attractions
Want to get even deeper into the wildlife of this fab part of the world? As well as the outings organised by the resort, you may like to take hikes in the Cahuita National Park (20 minutes’ drive) or guarantee yourself some sightings of the local beasties at Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge (25 minutes) or Santuario de Perezosos wildlife sanctuary (half an hour).
Or perhaps you’d like to expand your horizons with a bit of underwater exploration? If so head down to Playa Chiquita or Playa Cocles (both 20 minutes) – both of these beaches are splendid places for a swim or a bit of snorkelling… or just chilling out on a proper palm-fringed Caribbean beach.
For a glimpse of local life (the human variety), take a 20-minute stroll down to the local town Hone Creek or drive for five minutes or so to Talamanca Family Art centre to check out traditional crafts.
