If you need a hand spotting the wildlife, there’s the Sloth Watching Trail La Fortuna (two minutes' drive) and the Rainforest Chocolate Tour (five minutes) And North Fields Coffee Tour (five minutes) for more caffeine-powered educational tours. Adrenaline fans will surely want to stop by the photograph-friendly El Salto rope swing (five minutes) too.
Really dig deep into the local rainforests with a hike past frogs and crocodiles at Arenal Natura Ecological Park (10 minutes). Then, visit Catarata Río Fortuna (10 minutes), a 70-metre waterfall among packed treetops. The volcano-based hanging bridges also stack up for a teeth-gritting show at Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park (25 minutes).
As for lava trails, observation decks and hot springs, there are all sorts spread over Arenal Volcano (10 minutes) and its national park. Meanwhile, Chato Volcano (35 minutes) has a lagoon, lake and seemingly endless hiking paths too. For water-based activities, it's also just 20 minutes to Lake Arenal if you fancy swimming or boat rentals.
