It's free, quick and easy!
- Well-maintained site half an hour’s walk from Airlie Beach
- Tours including scenic flights and Whitsundays boat trips organised
- Daily bird feeding, wifi, snack kiosk, playground and miniature golf
Whizzing off to the Whitsundays? Have a few days before and after by the pool in the tropical surrounds of Island Gateway Holiday Park, a half an hour’s walk from northern Queensland’s Airlie Beach.
This site with a personalised, friendly service organises tons of tours that will have you ticking off all sorts of memory-making experiences: think snorkelling and diving the Great Barrier Reef, taking scenic flights to world-class stretches of sand and sailing around the 74 Whitsunday Islands.
During days off from mind-blowing adventures, the park is set up for relaxed stays. It has three barbecue areas for indulging in that most Aussie of customs – gathering together and grilling up grub – and organises daily bird feeding on base as well.
Still got food on your mind? Making meals is sorted at this site with a couple of shared kitchens for cooking and a kiosk selling drinks, basic groceries and ice cream. It’s also opposite a tavern that serves eats and is around 300 metres from a small supermarket. Airlie Beach's marina (five minutes’ drive) has a bus station, shops and cafés, plus local markets are held in the area on Saturdays.
If you want to get out and about on two wheels, ask on site about bike and pedal kart buggy hire, then ride to the sandy shores dotted along the coast. The site also has a half tennis court and miniature golf course (with free putter and racquet hire), as well as a playground, for blowing off steam.

Local attractions
Have chilled-out times on the sands at Airlie Beach lagoon (five minutes’ drive) or travel a bit further on to Dingo beach and Hydeaway bay (45 minutes) to see some especially scenic parts of the coast. Like your activities more on the amped up side of things? Set off for splashy swims in the Cedar Creek Falls (30 minutes) or have hardy hikes through the national forest on the Whitsundays Great Walk.
For other wandering options, head through the bush down to Shute Harbour (an hour and 45 minutes’ walk) before gliding on the water during a kayaking cruise.
Of course, you can’t come to this part of the world without visiting the Whitsundays islands. Tick this ace archipelago off your bucket list during a 2.5-hour boat trip spent gazing out at the bright white sands and turquoise waters.
