General

  • Family-friendly countryside camping retreat in the quiet Cothi Valley
  • Llandeilo 15 minutes' drive; 20 minutes to the Brecon Beacons
  • On-site kids' play area; spacious pitches close to the river Cothi

Come and take stock of spectacular scenery at Tireithin Meadow Camping Retreat, a family-friendly site in the quiet surroundings of Carmarthenshire's Cothi Valley. Sitting on 12 acres of well-maintained land, this site is a few hundred yards from a peaceful river, within reach of the off-road hiking and BMX trails in Brechfa Forest (20 minutes' drive) and just under three quarters of an hour from South Wales's cracking coastline.

There's all sorts of outdoor activities to try out in the surrounding area, so make sure to bring a bike, walking boots and an open mind. This part of the Carmarthenshire countryside has, for example, plenty of footpaths for scenic strolls, castle-crowned hills to conquer and a bike trail that passes right in front of the site gates.

Fancy a more chilled time? That can be accommodated too – just walk a few hundred yards down to the banks of the river Cothi for some paddling and nature spotting, take the kids to the on-site play area or bring along a firepit and sit back to warm your hands while enjoying a well-earned break and a sky full of stars.

This secluded site is about two and half miles from the village of Llanfynydd and its pub, while the nearest shop is a 10-minute drive away in Pontargothi.

Lovely and peaceful site. The owners were very helpful and pleasant to chat with. When we arrived back from a walk soaking wet they did their best to increase the shower temperature (which is capped to stop children being burnt) attempted to rescue my water damaged phone and offered to dry our clothes. The park kept my child entertained whilst dinner was being made and the owners had provided football with nets and a badminton set up as well as a fire pit. The showers and toilets were clean and tidy. Drinking water provided along with space in a fridge, freezer and a wash up area. Pitch is of decent size and pretty flat.
No signal which i like on holiday!
It's can be a bit of a drive to places but the lovely scenery makes up for it.

    Disliked:

Not much. Would have liked the showers a degree or 2 warmer but a) I understand why it's capped b)not a deal breaker.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind words, we are glad you enjoyed your stay, just a shame the weather wasn't kinder for your trip to Pen y Fan.
We have the showers set to 38 degrees which we normally find is about right for both adults and children, we are happy to turn them up on request if needed. It could be that the colder temperature affects the gas boilers. Please be assured we have taken note of your comment.
I do hope that you'll come back to visit us in the near future.

On our Wales trip, we did stay at this Camp site just for a day 17/8 but the memories will stay forever with us as this was our First Camping experience and all the credit goes to David & Fiona for their excellent hospitality. A very helpful and a lovely couple.

This was our first Camping experience, we had planned to reach the site early so that we can set up our tents, but plans got messed up as we could'nt reach there before sunset. That's where our adventure started, it was already getting dark and missed to reach the Camp Site with the Co-ordinates provided and the result was obvious, reached to a different property, this is when Fiona came to our rescue and she was so patient to explain the route, so that we can easily reach the Camp Site.

Finally we did reach the Camp Site, now time for a new excitement i.e., we don't know to set up tents and it is dark :). Here she comes David's niece (sorry I have forgotten her name) who was a Savior on that evening. She

did set up the tent in a very quick time and made it look so easy. 2 tents were to be set up in that dark but I had zero knowledge except watching few videos over the internet while one of my friend had a basic idea which helped to accelerate. Finally, with their help David, Fiona and David's niece, tents were on and had a peaceful sleep overnight.

I can never forget that early morning, it reminded me of my childhood at my grandma's village, pleasant morning, birds chirping, cock-a-doodle-doo, mist... oh what a mesmerizing place.

Now coming to the Camp Site, it is a very well maintained, clean, hygienic place, toilets were excellent. I would say it is eco friendly too, as they are using solar lights to light up the common areas, good thought.

There is a small play area also for Kids and our kids had a very good time next morning while we were busy getting ready. It's a shame we didn't stay their for long but definitely it is a place to stay and hosts are amazing and would definitely like to return next time.

Found the playground too far and out of sight from the campsite for comfort. Would have been better if it was visible so that you have peace of mind and can relax while children are playing.

A great rural getaway.08/29/2021

Loved everything. We stayed 7 night's from 14/8. Tireithin Meadow is an amazing rural retreat. The hosts, David and Fiona are lovely. Always there to have a chat or offer advice and recommendations. It was great to chat with them about the site and hear of its journey as well as future plans. You almost felt that once you were onsite we were all just part of the big friendly Tireithin Meadow family 😁. David helps you to and from the car with luggage and equipment if required. Just pop it in his trailer and he drives it to your pitch with the quad.

The site is lovely. We stayed in a bell tent which offered some excellent creature comforts, as well as our own kitchen area and table/bench. Cool packs available every day to keep the Coolbox nice and cold. All the utensils and pans you need are provided. Fresh drinking water is available next to the sink area and the bell tent kitchen has a water container. It gave us everything we needed and more. We sat out every night of our 7, around the firepit, until late. Listening to the night sounds, watching flickering flames and glowing embers. As dusk fell we were often treated to the sights of some swooping bats, flitting around us as we circled the fire. Weather permitting we had a few occasions to see the clear skies and enjoy the moon and stars.

The facilities were of an excellent standard across the board. Toilet and shower blocks were sparkling clean. The wash up area was always gleaming. A credit to the campers also who all treat the facilities with care and attention. We never had to queue for any facilities as the size of the site and volume of occupancy allows it never to become "busy".

For the children, there is the contained play area with climbing apparatus, swings and trampoline. This is a great addition and allows the children to mingle and play and make friends with others on site. The meadows pitch is great, where the children can play badminton, football or just roam safely amidst the call of the crickets, taking care not to tread on a frog or two 😁.

The site is conveniently located for local attractions and days out. There are a few local castles which Fiona pointed us toward and provided directions to. These were a really enjoyable day out. There is a river locally and David and Fiona guided us toward a good access point where we could enjoy some wading or swimming if you were brave enough. We spent an afternoon at the river and scavenged some wood and brush to build little boats/rafts... Fun was had attempting to launch these craft....

A feature of any trip is the weather and although we didn't have the scorching sun, it didn't matter, we sat out one damp afternoon, round the fire, we baked bread on stick's..! Many marshmallows were roasted and we BBQ'd over the fire also.

This site is really great to get away from it all and just relax, sit back and have some quality time just connecting with some of the basic and simple pleasures with no tech interruptions. You get to chat with other campers around the site and just have a nice relaxing stay in a safe and comfortable environment.

We would definitely consider returning to Tireithin in the future. Well done to David and Fiona for creating this amazing place.

Local attractions

Once you've been out in the wilds, you might like to turn to lower-intensity landscapes like the National Botanic Garden of Wales (20 minutes) – best followed-up with trips out to pretty parks like the National Trust-run Dinefwr Estate (20 minutes) or the restored medieval grounds of Aberglasney Gardens (20 minutes).

When it comes to the coast, you could very well stick to Carmarthenshire, exploring Tâf Estuary spots like Laugharne Castle (45 minutes) or settling down on Llansteffan beach (40 minutes). Pembrokeshire seaside resorts like Saundersfoot and Tenby (both roughly an hour) are other tempting possibilities – especially if you've got kids in tow who'd appreciate trips to nearby family-friendly attractions like Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (an hour).
