General

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside site on the West Highland Way trail
  • A 20-minute drive from Loch Lomond; 30 from Glasgow; 40 from Stirling
  • Barbecues allowed and breakfast included in price

If you’re fond of Scottish wilderness, wildlife and hillside hiking paths, then it’s highly recommended that you hunker down at this Blanefield site, for it’s right on the West Highland Way walking route and within easy reach of the Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling – plus the waters of Loch Lomond too.

Cue pics, because the views are utterly sensational from here: West Highland Way Campsite looks out over a lake as well as heather-covered hills in the near distance. This is a remote area with lots of outdoor adventuring to try, such as horse riding via the centre two miles away in Strathblane, or fishing for salmon and trout at Allander Water five miles away. Or head to Loch Lomond for more fishing, several hiking trails around the lake, and kayak and boat hire; it's an easy 20 minutes' drive away.

Back at base, set up for days’ worth of angling at the neighbouring lake, and fire up the barbecue when suitably famished. At night, keep your cockles warm with a campfire, and as the cinders smoulder away, sit back and enjoy the dark skies above: this site’s remote locale makes for some pretty sterling stargazing. Once it's light again, fuel up for the day ahead by joining fellow guests for breakfast (it's all thrown in with the price of your stay).

Also on the park (an excellent idea in Scotland's land of midges), are two high-tech midge repellers shipped in from the US: the owners now reckon this might be the only site in Scotland that's now midge free.

A friendly welcome to a wonderfully relaxed hotel that was more an open home. Guests mingled together and shared conversation and stories. There was a choice of camping area and the option for an open fire. Dinner was good and breakfast an open buffet. Beautiful views glimpsed through the trees as falcons, eagles and swifts flew above. A great place to stop on a long walk.

Fantastic campsite with very friendly staff and clean facilities06/10/2019

We stayed in a Safari Tent for 4 nights and had a fab time, definitely worth what we paid for it! Lovely warm duvet and double bed provided, which kept us warm even when it was windy. The tent was very spacious and the campsite felt safe. Dru and his team are very friendly and always on hand if you need help. The kitchen is very well equipped for making your own breakfast, and the shower and toilet facilities in the house were always clean. The beautiful cat and the dogs on site made the stay even better. The campsite is in a great location for going for walks along the West Highland Way and for driving to Loch Lomond (25 mins to Milarrochy Bay, where there is free parking), and it is also a short drive to nearby towns where we went to restaurants or collected takeaway food (Drymen, Bearsden, and others). Mugdock Country Park is a short drive away and is absolutely enormous with lots of nature and walking to be explored (and castles!). Wi-Fi was free in the house and it just about reached the tent too, although the connection was a bit patchy given it was so far from the house. Had a great time and would love to come back again!

    Access to breakfast
    Nice area

    Disliked:

Sold as ehu which is why we booked however extension leads running into house which is definitely not explained in description of campsite!! Very unsafe. On one occasion we were unplugged and asked to plug into our neighbouring tents extension lead and on another occasion the neighbouring tents extension lead was cut at the plug with no communication/explanation from the staff.
Generally felt unwelcome in the house and the staff were always hanging around in the kitchen at breakfast getting under the many guests’ feet and not lending to a relaxing environment.
Use of a caravan toilet and shower was not ideal for the large number of guests and campers frequently greeted by surprised and disappointed looks of people staying in the caravan who were not made aware that everyone could use it!! One night the caravan was booked and we couldn’t use it at all-no communication from staff about this!!
The owners dogs poo was not picked up and we frequently found it around our tents.
Provided with the contents of the kitchen bins to make a campfire??!!! Disgusting.
All in all a very dishonest selling by the campsite on pitchup so you literally do not get what you think you paid for. Honesty is the best policy.

    Disliked:

This was not a conventional campsite it was more of a male do campsite in someone’s garden. Bay was a gravel part of the drive. Not having designated electric hookup as only had extension linked to house. Having to use toilet and shower in communal static caravan that the whole campsite used or the communal one in the house again that all the guests and campsite had access to.

Liked the so called "Scottish wild cat" I have my doubts but work it out for yourself.

    Disliked:

Disliked everything. A terrible place from start to finish. On arrival the owner had no record of our visit or the fact that I had paid £130 for a bit of grass for three days.

We asked at least four times for electricity to be linked up and this also proved a total inconvenience for them. One "staff" memeber saying he had all ready bought two extension cables that day and would not be buying any more.

Avoid this place like the plague. I enjoyed all aspects of the camping experience, I just totally regret not picking somewhere else to have pitched up.

Advertised as having an electrical hookup for the forest pitch but hookup was only available for the normal pitches.
WiFi doesn't cover the forest pitch area.
Has campfire area but scattered with glass, dog faeces and a burnt out mattress - not great for young kids.

Local attractions

Several active options are within easy reach: as well the West Highland Way and nearby horse riding, the site is 20 minutes’ drive from a golf course eight miles north of Glasgow near the village of Torrance.

For something water-based, Allander water is five miles away for salmon and trout fishing while the south-eastern shores of lovely Loch Lomond are a 20-minute drive away. As well as fishing, visitors can rent themselves a vessel to investigate the island, where a picnic area awaits: do bag lots of local produce to take along...

If you’re planning on sticking to land-based activities in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, plenty of hiking trails lie around the loch and the wider lands for sunset strolls, or you could hike up a munro, tramp around wild glens, or cycle over the Duke’s Pass.

Climbing, bouldering and mountaineering are all popular around the national park too: head to (among many other spots) the mountains around the coastal village of Arrochar for cross-grade summer and winter climbing.

Must see

  • Glasgow Botanic Gardens (12.7 kilometres)
  • Clydebuilt (Scottish Maritime Museum Braehead) (12.7 kilometres)
  • Hunterian Art Gallery (13.4 kilometres)
