Glastonbury Camping and Caravanning: View of the site from the Tor

General

  • Small family-friendly site at the foot of Glastonbury Tor
  • Five minutes’ drive from Glastonbury and 15 minutes from Wells
  • Shared basic kitchen for guests, underfloor heating in shower block

Rural views as you wander, or rural views as you sit clutching a cider on site – park up for a bit of both at scenic Glastonbury Camping and Caravanning, a small and family-friendly Somerset site five minutes’ drive from Glastonbury.

The site’s particularly well placed for countryside jaunts – it’s a peaceful 25-minute ramble from here into the centre of Glastonbury, where guests can head out for hikes along the famed Monarch’s Way all the way to Wells. If that’s too lengthy, opt instead for clambering up Glastonbury Tor – it’s less than 15 minutes’ walk to the base, then a relatively easy climb to the top for cracking views over the Somerset Levels.

More? Take explores further afield with wanders into the pretty Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the oh-so-scenic Cheddar Gorge is already posing for photos, and sub-surface explores await at Wookey Hole caves.

There's no need to trek that far for lovely vistas though… Views of Glasto Tor and the Somerset Levels can be had from the pitches, making evenings spent unwinding a proper visual treat. Settle in with a home-cooked meal – prepped in the basic shared guest kitchen, with fridge-freezer, microwave and kettle – then wash off the remains of the day in the shower block, where underfloor heating keeps toes warm even on chillier days.

Lovely quiet site, dog friendly, fantastic view of Glastonbury Tor which is within walkable distance. Very clean showers and loos still well organised with Covid aware precautions in place. This was my second visit and definitely not my last. Please follow owners instructions about directions closely as the sat nav will take you up a teeny tiny lane from which the campsite is not accessible.

Fantastic little site with only 5 caravan/motor home pitches and a beautiful view of the tor. Well maintained grass around the pitches and hard standings.
Great toilet block with nice powerful showers, the block is split into 2 sides and I couldn’t get the hand wash sinks on the right to work at all but the left were fine. The lights on the right also turned off whilst having a shower so the timer needs extending slightly.
No problems with the access as it is straight off the A361, although a little tight on the way out as I scraped a bush opposite pitch 1.
Nice walk up to the tor, steep but manageable. Amazing at sunset. There were bongo drums and people singing that could be heard on most nights.
I didn’t use the wifi as we had our Vodafone 4G router. Signal was ok and enough to run Netflix on the tv. Much of the surrounding countryside there is no 4G.
    Road noise wasn’t an issue.
We stayed for 4 nights but also fine for a night or two.
Pitches were nice and level, we managed to get the caravan and awning on the hard standing.
Looking forward to visiting again in the future.

Easy location to walk to the Tor or a small walk to the Chalice Well Gardens. Good hot powerful showers in toilet/washing facilities plus electric hookup for each of the hardstanding touring pitches. Owners very friendly and comes around everyday to introduce himself to new visitors. Facilities on our visit were also very clean.

    Disliked:

Water from taps and showers could be a bit of a challenge at times to get to work. The toilets and shower facilities have 2 showers and wash basins in each area so needed to run both showers just to get 1 working or both taps on wash basin to get 1 working. Even then on the basin in one iof the sections it was a bit hit and miss if it would work.

Local attractions

Glastonbury is known for its ancient sites, including Glastonbury Abbey and the Chalice Well, and a couple of museums – Somerset Rural Life Museum and the Shoe Museum – provide further food for thought for history fans. There are shops, pubs and restaurants to tick off while there, too, but if you take your shopping more seriously, outlet shopping centre Clarks Village is 10 minutes' drive away in Street.

RSPB Ham Wall (15 minutes' drive) is a fine choice for birdwatchers; those who seek a bit more firepower can transport themselves to Fleet Air Arm Museum (20 minutes) or Haynes International Motor Museum (25 minutes) for collections of aircraft, cars and motorbikes.

A taste of the West Country’s fave tipple – cider, of course – can be had by sampling the offerings at Wilkins Cider Farm (20 minutes) and Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Burrow Hill Cider (35 minutes), then stocking up on supplies for evenings by the barbie.

For kid-friendly days, pile into the car with a picnic and get close to lions, tigers and monkeys at Longleat Safari Park – really close if you opt for the VIP safari tours and feeding experiences – or join the thrill-seekers at Brean Theme Park and Brean Splash Waterpark (all 40 minutes).
