Riverside Caravan and Camping Park: Spacious pitches

General

  • On 70 acres of landscaped parkland close to Exmoor
  • Three specimen carp lakes; River Mole angling nearby
  • Play area, shop and country club with bar and restaurant

If a caravan park has 'Riverside' in its name, you might reckon you might get some fishing. And you'd be right: South Molton's Riverside Caravan and Camping Park has three specimen lakes stocked with quality carp, and more angling (and paddling) can be availed of at the nearby River Mole.

The site sits on 70 acres of landscaped parkland with ten acres of mature woodland running alongside the River Mole: as you might also reckon, it's all mighty pretty.

Riverside is a family-friendly park and has a play area and an on-site shop. A new country club was added in 2017, with a bar and restaurant, serving homemade food and a selection of local lagers, ciders and ales. It's a popular venue for the variety of entertainment on site, or for settling down for a quiet time during the day to use the free wifi.

Lovely setting, really nice that you can pitch up anywhere in the tent/touring field, we pitched up next to the fishing lakes. The food was really good at the clubhouse. Our son really enjoyed the play park and playing in the river. Dog friendly.

    Disliked:

It would be nice to have water supply closer to the tent/touring field.

    Lovely well laid out site.
Lovely River meandering through it for kids to play in.
    Clean and well decorated toilets
Lots of space to pick your own pitch although bare distance to toilets in kind when picking your pitch.
    Amazing carvery!
    Very friendly staff.
Hardly any light pollution I got a great picture of the Milky Way

    Disliked:

Not really a problem for us but something to bare in mind for visitors; there is lots of space for bigger groups and rallies so can be a little bit noisy at busier times.
Didn’t bother us as we like to see people have fun

Very pretty site next to a beautiful river which the kids loved playing in. Also a nice play area for the kids.
Staff were helpful and friendly and there was a good club house which served good food at decent prices.

    Disliked:

When it rained one night the water did not soak away at all so the field we were in was just a mud bath. Not much owners can do but be wary if you pitch up in the field next to river.
There are not enough water points in the fields. There is a single water point in each field but it is on the same board as the one electrical point. This meant the person who paid extra for the electrical point would pitch their tent around the electrical point and block accessibility to the water point so I was not able to get to the water point with the caravan barrel. This meant I and others with caravans in the fields had to roll the water barrels long distances to get water.

Local attractions

If you'd prefer something more active than fishing, it's a 15-minute drive to the Exmoor National Park for miles of scenic walks, mountain bike trails and lots more outdoorsy antics. Canoeing at Wimbleball Lake and beginners' climbing at Valley of Rocks are among the popular picks, as are pony treks and horse riding days through countryside and along the coast.

Speaking of the coast, there's much to enjoy here too: head west for the surf beaches around Croyde and Appledore, or north to Ilfracombe for more beach, the aquarium and boat trips to the island of Lundy. It'll take you 40 minutes or so to hit either stretch of coast.

Kid-friendly days out nearby include heritage rides on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (half an hour's drive), animal encounters at Exmoor Zoo (20 minutes) and Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (half an hour) and easy pedals along the traffic-free Tarka Trail from Barnstaple (15 minutes).
