Grass pitches by the coast
Surfing in Croyde

  • Friendly site a minute's walk from Croyde's surf beach
  • A 10-minute drive from Saunton Sands and 25 from Ilfracombe
  • Surf shop on site; pool and other facilities two minutes away on foot
One single minute. Yup, just 60 seconds. That’s all the time it takes to get to the beach from the splendid setting of Surfer's Paradise Campsite, on a green meadow a teeny distance from the coast in the Devon village of Croyde. Croyde is, of course, rightly famed as a surfing hotspot, so before you dash straight off to the beach (as enticing as its sands may be), you’d do well to wriggle into a wetsuit and grab a board for hitting the waves. Those who are new to all this can hire kit from the surf shop on site and find plenty of experts locally for a lesson or few. Not in the mood to encase yourself in neoprene? The sands are equally excellent for beach volleyball, sea-view walks, picnics or just a bit of chilling out, and there are umpteen visitor attractions nearby, including a dinosaur park, an animal park, an aquarium and sheep racing (but of course). Picnic tables are scattered around the site for those who’d like to do seaside self-catering, or it’s a 10-minute stroll to the village centre for pubs, restaurants and cafés. Toilets and hot showers are on site and guests are also welcome to use the facilities at the site’s larger sister park, a couple of minutes away on foot – a games arcade, soft play area, fishing pond and indoor pool with waterslide await over there.

What customers say

Great spot near the beach and town. Pitches are spacious and flat. Ablutions mostly clean, but some July/Aug 2026 reviews noted issues. Chill vibe, friendly staff. Noise from staff vehicles and road repairs were mentioned. Access to next door facilities a bit fuzzy.

Liked Friendly staff and close to the beach! Great location and laid back atmosphere. Walkable to town with plenty of bars and restaurants.

Disliked General cleanliness of some guests!
Although staff do try to keep the place clean.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Open family field with room for ball games. Quiet at night - think we were lucky as not at all crowded. Hot, available showers. Easy access to beach, surf. Really good washing up if you took own bowl!

Disliked Toilets a bit untidy at times - paper towels etc. Difficult to get taps to stop running g and waste water

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Always enjoyed this campsite for its location, quiet enjoyment and ease of use.

Disliked This year the usually well kept toilets and showers were consistently dirty. Twice a day cleaning was just not enough. There was also no floor scraper available (which was available at the main Ruda site shower block) which would have allowed for the wet sandy floor to have been at least scraped over after or before use. On top of this the showers were far too hot to be enjoyable and absolutely impossible to shower young children in. Far too hot for them.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very close to the beach, use of facilities on the main site, lovely and quiet. This site seems to get the brunt of the wind coming off the sea.

Disliked Toilet block is right next to a public footpath, not cleaned everyday, it was dirty a lot of the time.

All in all a great campsite but not worth £50 per night.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked How quiet our field was, how close to the beach and village you are too. Loads of space between each tent/van.

Disliked The toilets and showers could have been cleaned more frequently. Although it is also up to the guests to shower off the buckets of sand they bring back from the beach before even approaching a shower! Maybe and outdoor tap to rinse off legs and feet outside of the shower block would help?

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location - Very short walk to the beach. 5 mins to the village. Ideal for us.
Perfect for keen surfers & beach bums!
Space - although busy, there was plenty of space for everyone and we didn’t feel crammed in.
Facilities - ok, toilets grubby and lacking essentials particularly at busy times but I’ve seen worse camping toilet cubicles!
Family friendly.
Advised on arrival of two fields available one quieter for families one a bit more free for all, went for the free for all as our kids are older and sleep through anything. We only had one issue with someone coming back and blasting (and really do mean blasting!) D&B AT 1.30am, even that didn’t wake the kids mind you. But it was short lived, not sure if security came over or they realised the time!
Able to use facilities at Ruda such as the pool but my advice is to email about 10 days before and get your reference number and book your swimming sessions in asap particularly in the half terms. We got ours booked but many didn’t and it was a case of luck if someone didn’t turn up to their booking for a lot of families.

Disliked (Minor issues only) Toilets ran out of essentials a few times.
No freezer facility for ice blocks etc.
No plug in the sink at wash up station.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Fantastic location, awesome space and great team looking after the place. Plenty of piping hot water. Great camp site.

Disliked The loos and showers immediately by the path can get in quite a state, taps run too fast and flood the sinks, making it wet and sandy, perhaps a coded lock on the door might help???

Local attractions

Croyde’s an excellent beach, there’s no arguing with that (and home to some of the finest surfing this side of the pond) but it’s worth getting out to other corners of this coastline, as there are numerous gems to take in. Board riders may also like to take to the waves at Saunton Sands (10 minutes’ drive) while those in search of a little land-based time can scramble in the dunes at Braunton Burrows (20 minutes) or wander on the coast path to Baggy Point and beyond. Family-friendly seaside days can be had up in Ilfracombe (25 minutes), where you can scamper underground to Tunnels Beaches, come face to face with fish life at the aquarium and board sea safaris in search of wildlife out in the waves. Other options locally include the animated dinos and real-life beasts at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (35 minutes) and steam-powered outings on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (45 minutes). And that sheep racing? (Go on, you know you want to…) That’s at the Big Sheep amusement park (40 minutes), also home to a big indoor playground, a collection of rides and a brewery and gin distillery to perk up the grownups.
