Waggoners Campsite at Hampton Estate: Surrey views

General

  • Family-run farm campsite with access to the North Downs Way
  • Half a mile from Seale; Guildford a 10-minute drive
  • Firepits and barbecues for hire; local produce available to order

Hampton Estate's Waggoners Campsite is set in a large field fringed by woodland. With stunning views over the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and direct links to the North Downs Way and Surrey Cycleway trails, this family-run site is well-placed for families and couples looking for a big boost from nature deep in the Surrey countryside.

The staff here make an extra effort to create a friendly camping experience, with an emphasis on space, seclusion and escapism. This environmentally-conscious spot also tries to minimise its impact on the planet, with green solutions like hand-made compostable loos and cold wild woodland showers.

The site is off-grid and has no electricity, so it might be a good idea to bring a torch along. It's secluded without being isolated, as it's an easy half-mile walk from the small village of Seale.

When it comes to cooking, you can either bring a gas stove or hire a barbecue or firepit from the site staff. Home-grown, sustainably-sourced logs are available for fuel. You can pre-order a range of tasty locally baked goodies for your stay, as well as Waggoners Campsite at Hampton Estate's barbecue boxes with pasture-fed beef straight from the farm.

A beautiful and quite well equipped camping site. This place is spacious and surrounded by forest where people can enjoy. The grass on the ground is neatly mown for easily pitching tents and there are marks to make sure the location of each tent. There are well sorted facilities. The hand wash hut are separated from the pot wash hut. I remember 5 wooden compost toilet booths which are very clean. Everything in this place is very clean and well sorted and the staffs are very kind. In addition to this, the price is very reasonable. I'm very satisfied with this camp site.

The best thing I can say is that the campsite is EXACTLY as advertised. Trust what they say about themselves. The showers are strong, the compostable toilets are kept clean, the staff are friendly, the pitches are large, the location is BEAUTIFUL. The campsite is about ten minutes walk from Puttenham Common which is full of lovely places to stroll. I would absolutely commend Ben and the family for their wonderful work on this site and I hope it will be around for many years to come. Would most recommend for anybody hiking the North Downs Way between Farnham and Guildford, willing to carry a tent on their back, or any groups with a car and the desire to spread out.

    Disliked:

Due to being literally in the countryside, it is not near to any shops. Come prepared.

A really lovely pop-up campsite that’s ideal for hikers (just off the North Downs Way) and cyclists (National Cycle Route 22 and the wider Surrey Hills. Ben, the campsite manager was really welcoming and the pitches are nice and large compared to many campsites. The basic amenities of sinks and composting loos have been set up nicely, though I didn’t get a chance to try the cold water “forest bathing” showers.

If cycling/bikepacking, a massive plus is its proximity to London as you can get there easily via several national cycle routes (4>223, 20>22 or pretty much all along towpaths following the Thames path to Weybridge > the Wey Navigations to Brooklands > the Saturn trail to Frimley > Basingstoke canal / Blackwater River to Tongham, then quiet B roads to the campsite.

    Disliked:

You might find the amenities a little basic if you are used to more established sites, as there is no hot water available, but what they have installed they’ve done really nicely, using natural wood and copper pipes for the sinks etc. They were the nicest (and cleanest) compost loos think I’ve ever used. The site is one enormous field on a very gentle slope, surrounded by woodland, so some might find it a little exposed if you’re not by the edge but for most that won’t be a problem.
