General

  • Wild camping in a 15-acre forest near Heathfield in East Sussex
  • Ashdown Forest and Eastbourne beach both half an hour’s drive
  • Well-spaced pitches, fires allowed; shops and pubs five minutes’ drive

Deep in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Holmans Wood is a wild-camping spot in a 15-acre, family-owned pine and chestnut woodland surrounded by farmland. A range of pitches include mown paddock, forest-floor among the trees or cleared areas in the forest.

The wood is criss-crossed with tracks, making it accessible to all cars, but there’s also plenty of paths for exploring remote corners and indeed setting up your tent pretty much where you fancy among the trees. Dogs are welcome to join you on your adventures too.

Keep your eyes peeled when you are out and about, as the woodland is home to a family of roe deer and buzzards among other wildlife.

Simple facilities on this back-to-basics site include composting toilets and a hand-washing-and-teeth-brushing basin. Otherwise it’s all down to you.

Fires are encouraged and firewood is included in your stay; feel free to collect it yourself. Should you run out of barbecue essentials, Heathfield (five minutes’ drive) has shops, pubs and restaurants.

If you want a peaceful, back to nature experience in the woods, with what feels like no-one else around this is the campsite for you!
From the moment I made the booking and throughout our stay Ian was helpful, friendly and accommodating. He made sure that we had everything we needed when we arrived and let us know we could reach out if we needed anything at all.

The site is huge and it really is worth parking up before pitching and walking around the woods first as there are so many clearings to choose from!

The Village is a short drive away with some great little shops and a co-op for any items you may need.

This site is so amazing that we decided to stay an extra night!!

Lovely woodland peaceful break09/24/2022

Lovely woodland site which didn't seem too busy seeing as all the main pitches were scattered around the woods. No electric but there was a composting toilet and cold water washing up facility. Back to basics but very nice and clean to use. The owner couldn't be more helpful. If you have dogs you can also book the enclosed dog walking field which is about a five minute walk from the site.

    Disliked:

Only open for a short time every year which is a shame as such a nice place to come for a back to nature break. Also was quite expensive.

Very nice campsite, pitches surrounded by forest feel like wild camping and are a welcome change from the usual open fields on a farm.

It's basic in terms of facilities: compost toilets and a water container to fill your own. Everything was clean and functional so no problems there.

It's only a short drive from the beach at Eastbourne and arounds.

On top of that, communications from Ian were spot on, clear instructions, and very friendly.

Highly recommended and we hope to be back soon!

Wild camping for families08/31/2022

We'd never done this kind of camping as a family before but we absolutely loved it. Aside from the owner finding us when we arrived and a couple of encounters with other guests, we didn't see another soul on the campsite and felt completely secluded. The children loved playing down by the stream and we all enjoyed lighting our campfire to toast marshmallows.

It must be rare to have the convenience of parking your car at your pitch when in such a remote location, but doing so meant we had the perfect balance of leisure camping and wild camping. The shade of the trees meant we didn't get too hot even though it was a very sunny spell. The woods are beautiful and we'll definitely be back.

    Disliked:

These aren't dislikes but warnings / things to prepare for:

Getting water is a hassle. We only had one large container but once you're using it for washing up, brushing teeth and so on you get through it quickly. We took the opportunity of visiting friends to fill up (and to recharge phones) but best to come prepared in order to avoid having to use mineral water for wiping surfaces!

There aren't washing facilities. It was fine for 3 nights but if staying longer I'd have started to think about finding somewhere to take a shower.

We arrived and were greeted by Ian who was super friendly and helped us find the perfect remote pitch for us. The forest was beautiful and left very natural which really made you feel like you were in the middle of nowhere. We were lucky to have access to an off road pitch, but all the pitches were nicely secluded and we didn’t really bump into anyone all weekend (and it was fully booked!). Great wild camping experience whilst still having access to water & a loo! 100% recommend, we had a brilliant camping break!

    Disliked:

A drinking water tap would’ve been fantastic, but Ian did offer to fill up our containers and in the end we didn’t need any extra!

What's not to like about Holman's Woods...we thoroughly enjoyed our stay among the pine woods. Beautiful and peaceful. This is a back to basics site perfect for those wanting to retreat from the madness of the world and rest and recuperate and be closer to nature. Areas have been cleared among the trees upon which you can pitch your tent but none are within sight of each other so you feel like you have the place to yourself.

There is a perfectly clean composting loo and sink to brush your teeth and have a wash as well as a sink for washing up. Should you run out of something or be in need of supplies the small town of Heathfield is a mere 5 minutes drive away.

We particularly loved being able to collect our own firewood in the woods for our campfires and as the majority of the trees are pines the smell of the campfire was divine.

Everything! Secluded, tranquil, gorgeous setting, we will definitely be back. What a fabulous find. We stayed in the woods in our motorhome, totally off-grid & loved every minute of it. It was easy to get to & close to the coast for day trips.
Mostly though, we loved just being in the woods, relaxing & resetting ourselves.
Ian, the owner was fantastic, so accommodating & helpful, which added to the amazing stay. Thank you :)

Beautiful campsite! Ian made us feel extremely welcome, checking we had everything we needed and even lending us tent pegs. We loved the woodland and the way the pitches were nestled in to little clearings. Even if the site was fully booked you’d feel private. We walked in the woods and the meadow and watched the sunset before a campfire. Location is great - with a quick drive for shops and 45 minutes to Brighton. Will definitely be coming back!
