Take it easy in the County Durham countryside – everything at Eden Grange Glamping has been set up with relaxing family breaks in mind. Whether you’re stopping over for a night to break up a journey on the A1(M) or using the place as a base for a longer stay, you’ll be made to feel very welcome at this comfortable site on the edge of Shildon (five minutes’ drive, or a 15-minute walk). There’s a laidback rural atmosphere on site, with each of the glamping units surrounded by trees and overlooking lakes where you can go fishing. However, the centre of town is only just over a mile away, so you’ll be within easy reach of shops, places to eat and things to do, including the leisure centre, the heritage trail, walks in Hackworth Park and events at the civic hall or the local football club. You can also walk to Locomotion, part of the National Railway Museum, in about 20 minutes. A restaurant on site serves up breakfasts and dinners that you can eat in or take back to your unit. You’ll have your own kitchen facilities too, so you’ll be able to conjure up your own meals if you prefer. Each accommodation also has a proper bed, an ensuite bathroom and heating; bedding and towels are provided. Outside is just as lovely – each unit has its own private outdoor space, so you’ll really feel able to relax out there. There’s outdoor seating, a firepit and (the ultimate luxury?) your own hot tub.

Beautiful, peaceful spot with super friendly staff. Pods and facilities are spotless, many enjoyed the hot tubs. Good food at the restaurant. Minor gripes about hot tub temps and early restaurant closing, but mostly brilliant.

Liked Very friendly people and the glamping pods were beautiful and well placed around the fishing lakes

Disliked Location of the motorhome plots which were either difficult to access without disturbing the fishermen and a way from the facilities or by the bins. Compared with other sites we have stayed on we felt it was expensive for what it offered campervans .

Liked The friendly staff , beautiful surroundings.
Nice bar area

Disliked Only one shower which was in the only female toilet.
Wash up facility was quite a walk from the campervan pitches.
Was quite expensive bearing in mind the limited shower etc

Liked Very safe, clean and pieceful site.
Will definitely come back.

Disliked Restaurant closes at 5.30pm. Would love to have had an evening meal.
Takeaway was available though so not a total disaster.

Liked The campervan pitch with the hot tub, log burner and table. Great space to use, especially as the weather was crap at the time.

Although you weren't far from residential it felt like you were in the middle of nowhere and it was a great location next to the lakes.

It was pitch black and very quiet at night.

Disliked The hard standing pitch was flooded so maybe they need better drainage.
We weren't to impressed with the takeaway door onsite but that's just tour opinion

In the 1820s, during the heyday of the coal-mining industry, Shildon (five minutes’ drive) became a major railway hub. Today this heritage is celebrated at Locomotion, where you can see the world’s first steam locomotive, as well as model railways and a statue of Robert Stephenson, who designed the Stockton and Darlington Railway. There’s something for everyone at Raby Castle, Deer Park & The Plotters’ Forest (20 minutes). Wildlife enthusiasts might head straight to the 200 acres of parkland to admire the resident red and fallow deer, while kids might insist you check out The Plotters’ Forest first, an adventure playground with towers to climb and treetop tunnels to crawl along. Stretching along the River Wear, Durham (25 minutes) has an impressive Norman cathedral that houses the tomb of medieval scholar the Venerable Bede. Climb the Central Tower (it’s only 325 steps…) for far-reaching views of this university city, including Durham Castle.
