Ted's at Hunger Hill

9.4

This site does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Peaceful and friendly site in the Shropshire Hills
  • Walkers' paradise with many strolls and hikes close by
  • Well-maintained amenities including access for disabled guests

Bring those boots made for walking, for you'll be hungry for the hikes around Shropshire's Ted's at Hunger Hill.

Based in Sheriffhales about four miles from Telford, this peaceful, friendly and popular little site is in land where walks are all around, meandering for miles through the wildlife havens of the green Shropshire countryside.

Ted's is a smallholding, with grass pitches on a gently sloping field set among the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sheep and ducks wander the site – the kids are welcome to say hi or go and meet some of the menagerie at the animal paddock – and free-range eggs and fresh meat are usually available for sale.

Among the well-maintained amenities are disabled-friendly showers and toilets, chemical disposal points and facilities for charging and recycling. There's easy access from the site to Sheriffhales village, just off the main A5.

Very friendly site. We’ll maintained and cared for. Good setting. Good grass pitches, some level and some sloping. Nice views. Dog friendly with nice walks directly from the site.

    Disliked:

Single track access road with no pull off for a car and caravan. It would be a problem meeting another car and van coming in the opposite direction.
I assume that when the site is busy different arrival and leaving times are employed. We had no problems as the site was quite quiet.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback happy to know that you enjoyed the site.
Sorry about the road but it is a recognised highway "maintained "by Shropshire County Council highways department, we are constantly ringing them to repair potholes and they may come after a couple of calls. there are passing places for a single car but not great. Hope to see you again, Ted

Another excellent stay at Ted's in the Shropshire countryside. Grass pitch with hook up. Showers and toilets facilities well kept. Good drainage after rain on the gently sloping field which remained firm.

Lovely campsite with plenty of space and decent facilities in good working order.

Ted is a true gent and very helpful.

The site faces west so I was treated to a stunning sunset and some great stargazing. There's also a resident peacock who sometimes strolls over to say hello!

There's not much in the nearby village of Sherrifhales, so stock up on supplies in Shifnal or Newport if needed.

    Disliked:

Farmer decided to harvest the adjacent field at 8pm one night and bale up the straw at 7am the following morning - it was a bit noisy! Probably doesn't happen very often though, I must've been unlucky.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, great advice for other visitors and pity you picked the harvesting time but that is country life, but you seemed to accept the life, love Ted

Local attractions

As you'll have brought your sturdy boots, stride out into the Shropshire Hills AONB in any direction for green countryside and wildlife haven walks, or drive in the Telford direction for a woodland wander around Wrekin Forest.

Striding around establishments is also a topping option when on holiday in any locale, so check out the craft and antique shops, tearooms and pubs, grocers and butchers of the region's market towns like Ellesmere, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Bishops Castle, Ludlow, Much Wenlock and Bridgnorth.

Set in the centre of Shropshire on the River Severn, the Tudor town of Shrewsbury is also well worth a wander, for more shopping (but of course), Shrewsbury Abbey and Shrewsbury Castle, the museum and art gallery, town centre park and – if you're in town in mid-August – the famed Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Also around in Shropshire and its surrounds are award-winning museums, lushly green gardens, farms and abbeys, historic houses managed by the National Trust and English Heritage, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, about 20 minutes' drive from Ted's at Hunger Hill.

Must see

  • Royal Air Force Museum Cosford (7.5 kilometres)
  • Boscobel House & the Royal Oak (7.7 kilometres)
  • Darby Houses (Ironbridge) (12.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Sunnycroft (12.0 kilometres)
  • Wightwick Manor and Gardens (17.3 kilometres)
