Pitch

  • Riverside site in grounds of a 17th-century house in Nottinghamshire
  • Close to Sherwood Forest and 25 miles from Nottingham
  • Space for outdoor activities; rope swing and stepping stones
You'll sense the history all around you at The Old Vicarage, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed. Stays here are in the grounds of a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. Its grounds run down to the banks of the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees which were originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s. There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away. Every bank holiday, the site opens up their Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, with a chillout room, TV room and games, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine. Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities.

What customers say

Lovely, peaceful spot with a stream great for kids (swings, zip line). Staff are friendly, vibes relaxed. Facilities (toilets/showers) are basic, need work, sometimes crowded. Road noise noted by some.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This was our 4th or maybe 5th visit and we keep returning because we love the scenery and peaceful atmosphere and our son really loves playing in the stream, on the trampoline, and chatting to the chickens. The cave bar was open this time, and it was a lovely cosy spot to enjoy a drink.

Disliked This time we were charged £15 for a firepit, none of which is now refunded. That didn't include the wood. This seems really steep, especially when we only stayed one night. And we had to lug the firepit and wood to the far end of the campsite ourselves, whereas in previous years they delivered it to our pitch in the carts. Otherwise, no complaints! :)

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked We had our young ones and teens.
Great if you have the weather or kids that aren’t going to melt in the rain.

Disliked Nothing else really close by/walkable.
Would be 10 stars but the toilet and shower area was very poor. Barely cleaned and just not enough space in them.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Having been 4 times now, I love the family feel to this site. The children's play area and obviously the water keeps them occupied all day. Lovely and friendly welcome every time.

Disliked As it was busy being summer and only 2 showers in the female block meant having to wait, but to be expected. So jot a real dislike:)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The play areas and stream were a great hit with the kids . Hours of fun!
Surprising quiet campsite despite being near off the main roads

Disliked Staff didn't seem over happy/friendly
Facilities were basic and not massively clean. Can cope with it for a short weekend but I didn't want to shower the kids there
And we had brought our own toilet tent so we didn't have to use them much
WiFi password and maps not given out so had to just figure stuff out on our own
Owner shouted at my children to stop chasing the chicken that was loose but instead of being friendly and coming to talk to them she just shouted from her door step.. not very friendly

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked The site was lovely, with a natural water way running through for children to play in. Whilst there, an ice cream van popped by and also they opened their cave bar which was a treat.

Disliked The facilities were terrible. The shower leaked water everywhere, not enough room in the shower or toulet area and not enough facilities for the site.

Site felt over crowded and was very loud as a result.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked The site is great with the perfect river going through my 9 and 12 year old played all day everyday for 3 days

Disliked Needs more showers and bar would benefit from being open every day

From the manager: Thank you for your review
We are working on some new showers at the moment behind the green toilets on the tipi side of the river - they just aren’t quite ready yet.
We wish we could open the bar everyday but unfortunately we are only a small family run business and it isn’t cost effective to have it open everyday.
Thanks

Luxury 1 bedroom cabin

Liked Lovely location, big cabin with plenty of space, bathroom nice and big , shower toiletries nice touch.
Netflix on TV and YouTube was a bonus
Lots of space around for kids to play

Disliked We have been 3 times and loved it everytime, but this time round The cabin was left from the people before, as was a mucky nike white sock in the bed and the other under the sofa bed when we pulled it out for the kids to sleep on... tea towels had food all over them and was screwed up on the top shelf and was no clean ones ( I take my own, so it wasn't a problem) ... the fire pit outside had dog food in, so we didn't use it, and the outdoor sofa was that mucky it couldn't be sat on, so we just had the picnic bench to sit at.. so take your own camping chairs if u want to sit outside comfortably.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This is just a lovely camp site, this is the second visit we've had and I'm sure there'll be more.

The facilities are great, fridges, washing up area, shower and toilets located around site. It never feels too busy so lots of space to pitch up.

The kids love the river with the swings and zipline going across, and also the fishing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Visited with the kids (13, 10, & 6) and their cousins (7, & 5). Second time for the group, and we lucked out with the weather again. Kids adored playing in the stream all week, and the parents enjoyed that too!
Extra shower in the ladies was very useful, as were the bonus toilets by the wedding tent. It would be a struggle without them.

Disliked Unfortunately the washing up facilities could do with a bit of a glow up. Last year there was a bin in the cabin, and whilst I get that enticed some guests to leave their rubbish there, a sign to remind people where the bins are, and a little grey bin for food scraps would have helped avoid the sink getting blocked and encourage other guests to clean up after themselves.

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside has great places for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too. Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground. An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum. For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.
