  • Lincolnshire Wolds glampsite with luxury, eco-friendly shepherd’s huts
  • Gunby Estate five minutes’ drive; Horncastle 20 minutes
  • Outdoor barbecue and seating, woodburner and kitchenette at each hut
No need to let go of your creature comforts when you go into the Lincolnshire Wolds. Shepherds Retreat, in the slopes just five minutes’ drive from Gunby Estate, has luxurious yet eco-friendly shepherd’s huts full of lots of little nice-to-haves and those bigger features that you might want to complete your break (a woodburning stove, kitchenette and outdoor barbecue with a seating area to make the most of the unpolluted and often star-filled skies). As well as those, each comfortable shepherd’s hut packs in a cosy sleeping nook, a modern ensuite bathroom and an indoor seating area. Most likely, the majority of your time will be spent outdoors here, though: Shepherds Retreat is surrounded by peaceful woodlands, wildflower meadows and parkland, with big views across the National Landscape. What should you bring here? Binoculars for birdwatching, a book for the cosy communal reading room and your hiking boots for a countryside hike ending at the village pub, which just so happens to be only a 15-minute walk from base. Aside from birds, you might see the resident badgers or muntjac deer passing through the site. The owners are very interested in protecting the local environment, so over the years, they’ve planted over 1,200 native trees and hedgerows for wildlife to take up home in. The facilities are powered by solar energy and informed by other eco principles. You’re in good hands here, that's for sure, with thoughtful communal areas like a firepit added too. When you’re ready to head into a town, it’s a 10-minute drive from Shepherds Retreat to Spilsby (with its independent shops, pubs and weekly markets) and 20 minutes to Horncastle, oh-so-liked for its antiques. Louth, known as the Wolds capital, is a 25-minute drive away for yet more independent food shops, regular farmers’ markets and St James’ Church.
