  • Remote and rural site in the Lincolnshire countryside
  • Home to many rescue animals including hens, pigs, geese and ducks
  • Well-stocked fishing lake
What a lush site this is for gainful countryside holidays in the Lincolnshire countryside, whiling days away fishing, woodland walking and just lazing by the lakeside with open book or one's very own thoughts. There are animals too… Small and family-run Sunflower Park near Gainsborough has taken in quite a few rescue animals in their time (they're a friendly and welcoming lot here), so on site you'll meet the three family pets as well as some alpacas, several ex-battery hens and their strutting cockerel. Also adopted are a family of geese, ducks, Kunekune pigs and a couple of Gloucester old spots: do make sure to say hi to all. As you might guess, this is a relaxed and amiable site, set remotely and rurally on a five-acre plot that includes paddocks, a playground, open pastureland, a private woodland walk and a well-stocked fishing lake exclusively for guests' use. You might reckon the park's remote rural setting makes it a wildlife haven too, and you'd reckon right: its boundaries run directly into Laughton Forest's Tuetoes Wood, a Forestry Commission nature haven for walking and cycling among the trees, and home to wildlife like deer, foxes, owls, rabbits, jays, pheasants, cuckoos, woodpeckers – all within viewable and hearing distance from your pitch. Sunflower Park has toilets, showers, a drying room, a launderette and ice pack freezing. Firepits are available for hire for the whole of guests' stays and arrive full and ready to light. Please note that due to being in a forest location and on sandy ground, you will most likely come across spiders, ants, lizards, grass snakes, beetles etc. Please only book if you are comfortable with the fact that there will be wildlife around you.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Warm welcome, Good size pitches, kids play ground has lots of for them to do, and the onsite bar. The animals are an extra bonus.

Disliked: Toilet and shower facilities could do with an upgrade but work and are adequate

From the manager: Thankyou.
Fair review. We are regularly needing repairs and cleaning up. Beyond standard cleaning regimes.
Some visitors better them or allow children to dig. Get filthy then wreck the facilities sorting the kids out.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The dog exercise field

Disliked: Toilets/showers filthy, often without toilet roll. Rats around the toilets, which was also the pot wash area and chemical waste area. Lots of dog poo which had not been picked up. Pitch was completely just sand. Park was dangerous, exposed springs on trampoline, sunken trampolines with metal, bricks and rubbish etc stuffed underneath and weren’t properly covered, sharp metal scattered around park site, huge splintered bits of wood and unstable swing sets etc. WiFi £3 per device, per day, in an area with next to no phone signal

From the manager: What a load of cods wallop.
None of the points raised in your review were raised directly with any staff member during your stay. Yet you scored us 1/10 for customer service. Come on.
You gave us 2/10 for accommodation yet brought your own.
Ww received no reports of the toilets being dirty, out of paper nor infested with rats. Likewise on our periodic checks we found none of the issues raised
In 10 years we have never had a report of any rats in the areas you speak of.
No reports of dog poo from anyone on site and we were full.
Animals not kept appropriately. Based on what??
We are inspected by DEFRA, Trading Standards and the RSPCA. We too have countless testimonials from campers and visitors speaking only of our love and care of the animals.
Yes the three trampolines are dug into the ground. Meshing is sunken below ground level to prevent items being deposited beneath and more do to stop unsupervised children digging under to gain access beneath. No reports or nothing found consistent to your claims of sharp metals or splittered wood lying about in the play area.
What is tremendously alarming is you claim to have discovered these very dangerous conditions but did not act responsibly to remove or more importantly bring it to our attention. But again you scored us 1/10 for customer service.
Yes wifi is £3 for a day but it drops to £5 per weekend and only £10 for a whole week. So very competitive really
If you too had bothered to come and raised any concerns with us we would have explained that we actively discourage WiFi use as you are here relax. We too are very aware of the phone signal and it's shortcomings hence why we also discourage .
For those that simply can't do without wifi, maybe for composing inaccurate or false reviews, then we point out the better areas of coverage and explain that our wifi is starling and very expensive, but our commitment to customer service us such that we have it who can't do without.

This review will be contested as you are providing inaccurate or false information without any evidence.
What you have not given is an opinion based review as per pitchup policy.
You state factual issues without raising those issues at the time ( some of which are dangerous), provide no evidence and your review is completely at the other end of the spectrum of huge numbers of reviews posted in the last few months. They can't all be wrong and you right.

Liked: It was a great site especially for the grandchildren who enjoyed seeing all the animals and there were a lot! They enjoyed the park too. We used the small shop a couple of times. The location was fab and we enjoyed a great walk through Laughton Woods.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Hosts were really friendly, lots of animals on site and excellent playground with trampolines for kids. Felt very safe on site. Plenty of toilets and showers nearby, very basic but met our needs. Small bar onsite too. Fantastic ice cream/desert cafe nearby too!

Disliked: We booked a grass pitch but arrived to a sand pitch. Host did take time to explain the reason for this being damage by other guests however perhaps would be better advertising the pitch as sand rather than grass. Also there was a quiet beeping sound all day and night for the entire stay which could be heard by several pitches closest to the bar/toilets. Not loud enough to disturb anyone but rather annoying hearing it every minute or so when trying to sleep at night.

From the manager: Thankyoufor a kind review.
Over the last few months we have been gathering road plainings and top coating all roads n paths to improve accessibility for all and to keep the site cleaner in wet weather.
This work finishes this week

After that we need to gorm a plan to regress pitches.
Issues are sand is great for drainage. Not great for growing grass.
Children n dogs being allowed by their supervisors to dig in sandy areas, making matters worse and finally demand of pitches along with the Income, for our animals. Times when repairs are best carried out are our busiest times.
The quiet beeping noise is the CCTV.
It only beeps when active do campers must be in our yard at night. If it's sounding at night

Brilliant, highly recommend

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The whole experience was great, from the scenery to the animals, the staff were really friendly. Ian and josie obviously go above and beyond to keep improving the site. All the amenities were clean and well maintained.

Disliked: The sand, but this was a five minute clean at the end of the trip so no big deal at all.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The setting is beautiful. Small but plenty big enough for the kids to be entertained all weekend. Felt like you were staying with friends the staff were amazing. So happy to help and just chat with you. The people looking after the animals loved talking to the kids when they asked questions or just wanted to watch.
The facilities were clean and tidy. The onsite bar/cafe was lovely and well kept. The Sunday night entertainment was fab and it was lovely to be able to have a drink and sing whilst the children ate sweets and came and went to the park as they pleased. I felt safe leaving my things at the tent and letting my older kids explore independently.
Lovely little fishing pond. The animals were fab especially for my little boy of 3 who thoroughly enjoyed saying good morning to the donkeys when he woke up each day and the ducks that he said were his friends.
Overall, we will for certain be coming again and I’d like to stay for longer next time.
We had a fantastic, relaxing and enjoyable bank holiday weekend where my kids(even my teenagers) could be kids again and this is rare these days with phones and social media. I felt like they got dirty, played and just were young and I haven’t had them like that for a few years now it was truly lovely. Myself and my partner were able to relax and enjoy the outdoors fully too

Disliked: The only thing I would maybe add would be another toilet block or even just a porta loo at the other end of the wild camping section. Just so that in the night, we don’t have to walk all the way to the other toilet. This would be the only thing I would change but it isn’t something that would stop me coming again I just think it would be a good idea

From the manager: Thankyou so much.

We constantly want to Improve the site

Animals and then upkeep/repairs take mist of our money.
Now we have achieved water and power as far down as wild camping we can now introduce additional facilities when finances allow

Portaloos are very expensive to hire.

We are not a profit making site.
Primarily we are an animal rescue site which is a complete money pit.
But when we have spare funds it goes on Improving the experience for all visitors. Please bear this in mind

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Oh my goodness. This place is super special!! We loved it. With really friendly owners Josie, Ian, their staff, the 'crazy gang' of animals & the fishing pond, we was in our element. We had a few walks in Laughton forest. Hot showers too.....no push button for the shower is a rarity these days. We cannot wait to return.

Disliked: It isn't a dislike really, but the shower / toilet facilities could do with an upgrade. Having said that, they serve their purpose, they were always clean, always had loo roll & the showers were hot. I'm also aware that the crazy gang come 1st & quite rightly so!!
Really disliked having to pack up & leave!

Local attractions

Walkers, hikers, cyclists, energetic runners and nature spotters have Tuetoes Wood right beside Sunflower Park, the Forestry Commission-managed and publicly accessible part of vast Laughton Forest. If you're an avid animal fan, take time to get to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park just outside Doncaster, home to a menagerie of over 300 from around the world, and to The Deep at Hull, one of the biggest aquariums in the UK and a habitat for over 3000 marine critters. Going south, history buffs can get to Lincoln for eleventh century Lincoln Cathedral, the third biggest in Britain after St Paul's in London and York Minster. Lincoln Castle is also well worth a look, to gaze geekily upon one of the four original remaining copies of the Magna Carta.
