- Close to bus stops for visiting the island's attractions
- Less than 10 minutes' walk from a quiet white sandy beach
Parlez-vous franglais? You will once you’ve had a holiday at Le Vaugrat Campsite on Guernsey, a fab holiday location between the UK and France that manages to feel like both countries at the same time.
It’s not just French and English that find a harmonious balance around here: on their site, in the grounds of an 18th-century farmhouse up at the top of the island, the Laine family have worked hard to create a blend of peaceful outdoor life and comfortable facilities.
Around the site’s fields you’ll have plenty of space to spread all your kit out, light your barbie, run around or just put your feet up; if there’s a big event to watch, you can get comfy in the lounge and TV room instead. Social media addicts can charge devices here as well as use the free wifi.
The nearest supermarket is five minutes' drive away and a small shop on site sells essentials. There’s also an on-site launderette (with washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing facilities) to keep your holiday wardrobe looking chic – you are in almost-France, after all…
The crowning glory, though, could well be the location – less than 10 minutes’ walk from a white sandy beach, and with sea views from much of the site itself. Say yes, say oui – either way, you’ll be mighty pleased you did.

Local attractions
Guernsey is only 25 square miles in area, so wherever you want to go, it'll be within easy reach. You can walk to several attractions from the site, or catch the round-island bus from a nearby stop.
The island’s 20th-century history is entwined with that of World War II, with several commemorative places to visit. A 20-minute drive away is the German Occupation Museum, which has displays including weapons and uniforms, as well as a reconstruction of shops as they would have been. Among the German fortifications left, the restored gun bunker at Fort Hommet is closest and can be reached on foot in around an hour.
A must-see is The Little Chapel, built in the early 20th century by an exiled French priest and thought to be the smallest consecrated church in the world (about eight people can fit inside). Every surface inside and out is covered with a mosaic of broken china, pebbles and shells – look closely to see the details and then step back to take in the overall effect.
At the end of the day, do as the locals do and pack up a picnic or barbecue and walk 10 minutes to Port Grat beach to dine as you watch the sun set over the white sands.
