Bridge End Camping

Holmrook, Cumbria, England

Tent pitch
Unpowered grass tent site

I wouldn’t return due to the toilet and showers.

Aug 2026

Liked Nice location, fires allowed, relatively quiet, friendly owners that visited a few times a day.

Disliked Bumpy/uneven ground, I went over on my ankle at one point. Although being able to pick your own pitch is good, there weren’t actually any assigned “pitches”, you had free rein to pitch anywhere in the fields, meaning you could pitch up and then get someone else pitching up right next to you. The toilets and showers! There were 2 showers and 4 toilets for 2 fields worth of campers. There were considerable queues in the morning. The lighting was poor at night, some toilets didn’t have lights. The toilet and shower doors had gaps in them so you could see in/out. The shower was cold 40% of the time, near scolding hot 40%, and the right temp 20% of the time. They’re in what are basically wooden sheds so I really struggled with the movement every time someone moved or the wind blew and the movement of the wooden floors as it triggered my vertigo/balance issues and I felt like I was on a swaying ship everytime I had to use them.. I wouldn’t have been able to stay longer than the 2 nights. I would avoid this site if you suffer with similar issues. People were brushing their teeth in the kitchen and outside the loos because of the queues (people spitting in the kitchen sink doesn’t sit well with me). Shower trays had grass and hair in them, and the wooden floor was soaking wet. Considering all of the above, £36 per night for a family of 4 seems expensive for a night in a field with very basic facilities.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write your review as it has given us the opportunity to correct several points as a number of your comments are misleading and simply outside of the control of the campsite. We always welcome genuine constructive feedback and would have been happy to discuss any during your stay had they been brought to our attention. Firstly it has become painfully obvious this season that the small minority of people can not read signs or information on booking platforms, or they have huge expectations for a £12 a night campsite, sadly it also appears the same minority have no regards for other people’s property. Let’s address the pitch first. They are deliberately unallocated giving the guests the freedom to make their own CHOICE! We have 2 fields available and you choose your OWN pitch, if it was bumpy and uneven why on earth did you pitch there ? In the 7 acres available there will be an odd place that maybe is uneven but YOU chose to pitch your tent where you did, despite there being plenty of room on site. I’m afraid as far as campsites go you’re always going to have someone pitched up near or next to you. We have seen more and more cases this season of people booking 10 people , 4 cars, 5 tents and the kitchen sink on to one pitch despite the booking platform clearly stating one tent , one car per pitch. This weekend was no exception and the site had a few more people present than we were expecting. The showers , where do I start. There are signs as big as the shower unit explaining how to turn it on and adjust the temperature, it’s really simple winter setting for a warmer shower and summer setting for a cooler shower. We can not be held responsible for those that choose to ignore these. We lost count of the amount of times when cleaning the showers over the weekend that the gas regulator was turned up to full, the isolator switch was turned of , the water pressure setting turned down and someone even took the batteries out of the unit ! When we arrived on Sunday morning, the back shower unit was destroyed, the shower head in pieces on the floor and the mess was soul destroying. Each shower has cleaning products and wipes available for you to use if needed. Again we can not be held responsible for people not cleaning up after they use the showers and you are located in a field which means there’s a great chance there might be some grass in the shower tray. The shower room floor has a rubber Matt present but I think the word shower will explain why the floor is wet. I’m not quite sure how we police others poor hygiene with regards to toothpaste being spat into the kitchen sink and these are things completely out of our control. We provide the facilities and ask guests to use them respectfully. Sadly The lights in the toilets had also been damaged over the weekend. I can assure you that our toilet and shower blocks do not ‘sway and move’ These blocks have withstood some of Cumbrias finest storms and never moved an inch and considering there was no wind this weekend I think this may be down to your own personal experience. They are solid permanent structures and I’m quite simply flabbergasted at your comments in regards to this. I’m also not quite sure what you were expecting for £12 a night for an adult and £6 a night for a child. There’s not a portaloo or compost toilet in sight, hot water for washing your dishes and no coin machines/extra charge for the use of the showers. We also stock the kitchen with all the cleaning products you need, provide toilet rolls, paper towels and handwash. We also leave wipes, sanitary products and nappy bags in the toilets and provide cleaning supplies in the showers should you wish to clean the shower before you use them. We appreciate our budget friendly little campsite may not suit everyone and thankfully the majority of our guests are respectful, can read signs and have the ability to choose their own suitable pitch type. We wish you all the best in your future camping trips
