- Adults-only resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina
- Beech Mountain Ski Resort 25 minutes’ drive; Watauga Lake 40 minutes
- Spacious sites; easy access to forested trails; dogs welcome
It’ll be hard to resist the urge to hum ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ as you drive along the mountain roads leading up to Dark Ridge HideOut. The only difference from the John Denver track is that, instead of being in West Virginia, you’ll be in North Carolina, close to the border with Tennessee; however, the landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains is just as spectacular.
This adults-only site stretches across 20 lush acres on the northern slopes of Beech Mountain (at an elevation of between 3,000 and 3,500 feet); Beech Mountain Ski Resort is on the other side of the mountain (25 minutes’ drive). Spacious pitches sit 100 to 200 feet away from each other, ensuring privacy for all guests. On-site facilities are limited – there are portable toilets and a shower; each pitch also has a picnic table, firepit and barbecue, and firewood is available for purchase at the site. That’s ample, right? And anyway… who needs bells and whistles with views such as the ones you’ll be able to admire here?
Your canine companion is welcome to stay with you (but please keep it on leash and pick up after it), and it might wag its tail at the prospect of exploring these woods. Alternatively, head to the Sassafras Trail (15 minutes), an easy circular route amid woodland. Twisting Falls (five minutes), on the Elk River across the Tennessee line, is closer but rather more challenging. Then there’s the mother of all hiking routes: the long-distance Appalachian Trail, which you can access at the US-19E road (25 minutes).

Local attractions
Beech Mountain Ski Resort (25 minutes’ drive) has a ‘No snow? No problem’ attitude, with plenty of facilities to keep visitors busy throughout the year – from hiking trails, of course, to a mountain-bike park; and from a high-altitude disc golf course to a scenic lift with incomparable views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
There are more splendid trails at Grandfather Mountain State Park (40 minutes), where you might need to steel yourself before crossing the Mile High Swinging Bridge across a deep rocky gulch. Hike (or drive up) to the Grandfather Mountain Overlook for far-reaching views across the woods, which are inhabited by elk, bears and otters.
Watauga Point Recreational Area (40 minutes) sits on the shore of Watauga Lake, a massive reservoir at 1,900 feet above sea level. This is the place for watersports (canoeing, boating…), fishing and exploring (some of) the 129 miles of shoreline – whether on foot or by car.
