  • Nature-based campground five minutes’ drive from I-71 in central Ohio
  • Groovy Plants Ranch five minutes’ drive and Alum Creek half an hour
  • Extra-large primitive sites; rewilded farmland and abundant wildlife
Tucked away under native woodland in central Ohio, Grins & Pickin’s CampFarm is a wild campsite on a 20-acre farm five minutes’ drive off I-71 and SR 61 (exit 140). On the outskirts of the quiet town of Marengo and 40 minutes by car north of downtown Columbus, the pitches are set in grassy glades or among the trees. The vision here? To rewild the farm and share it with guests. All the family (dogs included) can hike the woods, explore the creek and look out for wildlife – deer, turkey, mink and barred owls live here too. There’s also a fishing pond for catch and release bluegill, a prairie garden trail, a pollinator maze, bat houses and a frog pool. On clear nights, you may get to see the Milky Way, the Perseids and occasionally the Northern Lights. As this place is all about wild camping, there is no electricity on the spacious, tree-sheltered sites – and that means you can hear the frogs and owls when they come out at night as there is no generator noise. You’ll need to bring in your own water, but you can buy firewood as well as duck or chicken eggs, plus home-grown teas, oils and chutney when in season on the farm. No glass is allowed on the pitches, and during heavy rains, you may have to hoof it into camp as the creek can become impassable.

Local attractions

You can learn about growing food, flower gardening and homesteading from the farm owners, and if you’d like to take some native Ohio plants back home with you, Groovy Plants Ranch (five minutes’ drive) grows and sells wild cacti and succulents of all shapes and sizes. To see local vegetation in situ, look out for rare Eastern Prickly Pear cacti when you visit Hocking Hills State Park (an hour), where you can also discover spectacular waterfalls, cave complexes carved out by rivers and the Rock House – a water-sculpted natural tunnel through rock. Alum Creek State Park (half an hour) is your best bet for fishing and watersports like boating, kayaking, jetskiing and wild swimming; there’s also a designated dog beach so your canine pals can join in the fun. For a change of pace, you can learn to shoot clays at the Cardinal Shooting Range (10 minutes), and if you fancy a music night, Hoof Hearted Brewing (five minutes) hosts regular gigs as well as brewery tours.
