  • Family campsite among ancient oak forest in Navarre’s Sakana Valley
  • A 50-minute drive to Aralar Natural Park; 40 minutes to Pamplona
  • Swimming pools, sports courts and terraced tapas bar; hiking from site
This is a stunning setting amid the ancient oak trees of Navarre’s Sakana Valley – and Camping Etxarri has equally stunning views of Urbasa mountain range as well. At five minutes’ drive from the historic village of Etxarri-Aranatz, this site is the gateway to hikes and cycle rides in dramatic river, gorge and forest landscapes, and it’s only 40 minutes’ drive to the Bay of Biscay beaches of Gipuzkoa. Even if you choose not to venture that far from the campsite, there’s masses to do. The pool complex has a shallow pool for youngsters as well as a lap pool and a grassy area to spread out on, and families can challenge each other to hard-fought games on the padel tennis court. Kids still have lots of energy? Wear them out on the squash courts or the football pitch, or try a game of basketball, ping pong or billiards. Eventually (hopefully) they’ll get tired… The terrace bar-restaurant overlooks the pool (so adults can keep an eye on their offspring in the water) and has a menu of homemade pintxos (tapas on sticks), bocadillos (filled sandwiches), burgers and pizzas. If you’d rather take care of the catering yourself, there are picnic areas with mountain views, or you can use barbecues for grilling up supper.

Larri powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked Very friendly reception. Clear info & presentation of the services. We stayed one night, but when returning from holidays, maybe we visit again. Nice and cosy atmosphere. Clean place with reasonable prices.

Disliked The showers had two options: cold or hot water :) There was only one laundry machine & dryer, but maybe it's enough so far.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind feedback! We’re so happy you enjoyed the friendly reception, the clear information, and the cosy atmosphere. We’re also glad to hear you found the place clean and reasonably priced.

We appreciate your comments about the showers and laundry facilities. We will definitely take them into consideration for future improvements.

We look forward to welcoming you back after your holidays!

Safe travels and see you again soon!

Larri powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked Lovely big oak trees. Lots of footpaths and cycle paths nearby. Good location for a one-night stopover between Canfranc and Santander.

Disliked Small, cramped pitch. Wash block needs a complete re-vamp and requires more frequent cleaning. It all worked, but lots of leaf litter in the cubicles and cobwebs in the rafters, and a sense of many people's grubbiness. Unfortunately for us, it was also Bank holiday, so the site was really full and very noisy with Basque families BBQ-ing and playing until late. That was to be expected, but didn't make us feel socially involved as we don't speak Basque, nor helped us get a good night's sleep.

From the manager: We’re glad you appreciated the beautiful oak trees, the walking and cycling paths nearby, and the convenience of our location for your stopover.

We’re sorry to hear that your experience during the bank holiday wasn’t as peaceful as you had hoped. Indeed, on public holidays the atmosphere can be livelier, especially with families enjoying outdoor meals and games. We understand how this might feel overwhelming, particularly when there is a language barrier, and we’ll consider ways to make all our guests feel more included.

We also appreciate your comments about the wash block. Your observations are helpful, and we’re already working on improvements, including increasing cleaning frequency and reviewing maintenance needs.

Thank you again for staying with us and for sharing both the positives and the areas where we can grow.

Local attractions

Hikers, rejoice, for you have many scenic options for your adventures in the Sakana Valley. Families might like to try the Route of the Millennial Oaks, accessed from the site, or trace the Urederra River (50 minutes’ drive) through beech and elm forest back to its source for a cooling dip in pristine waters. One for experts only, the ascent up to the peak of Beriain (40 minutes’ drive to the route) rewards climbers with spectacular views over Navarre. A tour of Aralar Natural Park (50 minutes) gives the opportunity to visit Basque farmhouses to sample local ciders or Idiazabal cheese. Alternatively, discover some of the park’s megalithic monuments, from standing stones to burial mounds. Discover more about the ancient heritage of the region by driving the looped Dolmen Route (it takes around an hour and 15 minutes from your pitch) – each ancient stone has its own information panel. For an urban day out, head for the region’s charismatic capital of Pamplona (40 minutes) to shop and dine on tapas in its photogenic Old Town, or indulge in a bit of people-watching at a café in the striking Plaza del Castillo.
